A system includes a phased array antenna that is used to emulate antennas that have larger solid angle coverage and lower gain compared to a single beam of the phased array antenna. This is achieved by switching between beams of the phased array antenna while receiving a wireless communication signal and summing representations of signal energy received using the different beams. The system can be used to narrow down the angular coordinates of a transmitting satellite by emulating antenna patterns that cover portions of a search space. The system can also be used to determine a channel discriminator (e.g., frequency, code, time slot) that defines a signal being transmitted.

System in which a phased array antenna emulates lower directivity antennas

Multi-band quadrifilar antennas that are suitable for satellite communication include composite elements each of which include multiple conductors operating at different frequencies connected to a bus bar. Each composite element is coupled to a signal feed and to a ground structure.

Multiband multifilar antenna

A phased array antenna for an earth terminal for a low earth orbit satellite communication system. The phased array antenna includes a set of Quadrafilar Helical Antenna's (QHAs) elements that produce a peak directivity far off-axis which partially compensates for the angular dependence of satellite systems gain which peaks at relatively lower angle. To attain the desired angular dependence of the gain and operability at high zenith angles, the QHAs are preferably spaced apart by a distance between 0.4&#x3bb; and 0.45&#x3bb;, includes filaments that have a helical pitch angle &#x3b1; of between 62&#xb0; and 84&#xb0;.

Phased array antenna with improved gain at high zenith angles

A multi-mode, multi-band antenna system for a handheld wireless device includes a Quadrafilar Helix Antenna (QHA) that radiates circularly polarized waves is fed by a co-axial cable. The co-axial cable is also used in combination with the QHA as a monopole antenna. Because of the distinct electromagnetic field patterns of the QHA versus the combination of the QHA and the co-axial cable operating as a monopole antenna, the cross coupling between the two modes is low. In certain embodiments the co-axial cable can itself be formed into a helix in order to reduce the physical length of the antenna system while maintaining an electrical length desired to supported certain frequency bands in the monopole mode. According to certain embodiments a post which also serves to increase the effective electric length of the co-axial cable and thereby support a lower frequency band is provided along the centerline of the QHA.

Multi-mode, multi-band antenna

A tightly integrated combined transmit and receive dual quadrifilar antenna is provided. The antenna comprises four helical transmit elements and four helical receive elements disposed about a common axis. A receiver front end includes an arrangement of two 90 degree hybrids which serve to effectively reject signals cross coupled from the transmit elements back into the receive elements, while still allowing the receiver to receive signals.

Efficient front end and antenna implementation

An antenna systems for a handheld wireless device comprises an antenna disposed proximate an oblong ground structure (e.g., oblong PCB). The antenna is suitably adapted to radiated circularly polarized waves by supporting quadrature phased first and second resonances which are associated with electrical fields oriented at right angles to each other and at an oblique angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the oblong ground structure.

Antenna system for handheld satellite communication devices

Antennas that include an inner set of four helical antenna elements and a co-axially arranged outer set of four helical antenna elements. The helical winding directions of the two sets of elements may have the same handedness or opposite handedness. Certain embodiments provide for switch handedness of circularly polarized radiation of the antennas and certain embodiments provide for shifting the directivity of the antenna pattern in polar angle. Systems in which the antennas are used and methods of use are also taught.

Co-axial quadrifilar antenna

An antenna system includes a multi-port antenna with an active feeding network coupled thereto. The active feeding network applies complex weights to signals received from and transmitted to each port of the multi-port antenna. The complex weights are applied according to eigenvectors corresponding to a Hermitian matrix representation of the multi-port antenna. The Hermitian matrix may be based on such multi-port antenna parameters such as power dissipation, power radiation, real-power flow, volumetric storage of electromagnetic energy, and/or volumetric dissipation of electromagnetic energy. The multi-port antenna yields orthogonal electromagnetic fields in volumes or surfaces of interest in response to the active feeding network excitation.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system

An antenna assembly includes a ground plane and an element coupled to the ground plane. The element has a center point, a first element portion extending away from the center point on a first side of the center point for a first distance in a first direction, bending at a first approximately 180 degree bend, extending towards the center point for a second distance in a second direction, bending at a second approximately 180 degree bend, and extending away from the center point for a third distance in the first direction. The element also has a second element portion provided on a second side of the center point opposite the first element portion on the first side of the center point, the second element portion being substantially a mirror image of the first element portion. The element also includes a ground leg located on the first side of the center point a first distance from the center point, extending substantially perpendicular to the first and second element portions, and coupling the element to the ground plane and a feed leg located on the second side of the center point a second distance from the center point, the feed leg extending substantially parallel to the ground leg.

Multi-band low profile antenna with low band differential mode

A multi-band folded inverted conformal antenna (), suitable for use internally within an electronic device (), facilitates low-profile designs with the multi-band folded inverted conformal antenna () extending less than five millimeters above a circuit substrate () in some embodiments. The multi-band folded inverted conformal antenna () includes planar sections and a slot (), and is capable of multi-mode operation. For example, one embodiment is configured to operate in a first common mode (), a differential mode (), and a second common mode (), thereby allowing the multi-band folded inverted conformal antenna () to operate in a first operational bandwidth, second operational bandwidth, and third operational bandwidth. Portions of the ground plane conductor () passing beneath the multi-band folded inverted conformal antenna () are selectively removed at areas corresponding to concentrations of electrical charge, thereby allowing a more low-profile design.

Low profile internal antenna

A 'candy bar' form factor wireless handset () having an internal antenna () a bottom end of an main internal circuit board () and an auxiliary field shaping conductor () at a top end of the main internal circuit board () behind the an earpiece speaker (). The field shaping conductor () is spaced from a ground plane) of the main circuit board () but is inductively and capacitively coupled to the ground plane (). The field shaping conductor () lowers the electric field intensity in front of the earpiece speaker and thereby reduces interference of the wireless handset () with hearing aids.

A small volume antenna () has the form of a polygonal (e.g., square) board with multiple antenna elements () located at vertices () (e.g., opposite vertices). The antenna elements () include two segments () that meet at corners () that are located at the vertices (). Peripheral portions () of a ground plane () that underlie the segments () of the antenna elements are deleted, and slots () that have two joined segments () that parallel the segments () of the antenna elements () are formed in the antenna elements. The antenna elements () are selectively loaded by switched impedance (e.g., capacitance) networks (). The antenna () is able to support operation in at least two broad operating bands.

Electrically small low profile switched multiband antenna

An apparatus is disclosed for a communication device () with a wideband antenna () supporting at least two common and one differential resonant modes. An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present invention may include, for example, the communication device having an antenna () that includes a ground structure (), a first elongated conductor () spaced from the ground structure, a second elongated conductor () separated from the first elongated conductor, third and fourth conductors () each coupled to the first and second elongated conductors forming a gap (), a ground conductor () coupling the ground structure to one among the first and second elongated conductors, and a signal feed conductor () coupling to one among the first and second elongated conductors spaced from the ground conductor. Additional embodiments are disclosed. A &#x2212;10 dB bandwidth of at least 0.5 can be realized using electrical non-congruence.

Communication device with a wideband antenna

An apparatus is disclosed for a multiband antenna () in a communication device (). An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present invention may include, for example, an antenna having a finite ground surface (), and an elongated conductor () that is characterized by a length and is spaced from the finite ground surface. The elongated conductor has a first slot () extending through a substantial portion of the length of the elongated conductor, and a second slot () having a shorter length than the first slot. The antenna further has a grounding conductor () coupling the finite ground surface to the elongated conductor, and a signal feed conductor () coupling to the elongated conductor.
