A method for balancing a vehicle wheel includes mounting a wheel to be balanced on a rotating shaft of a machine computerized for measuring imbalances, and selecting an optimum commercial balancing weight which, when positioned on a correction plane, minimizes residual imbalance on reference planes of the wheel where the balancing tolerance is considered. One compares the residual imbalance value at the reference planes with the prescribed balancing tolerance after subtracting a vector of the static imbalance generated by the optimum balancing weight. An indicator device is activated to indicate on the wheel the optimum axial position of a correction plane for a balancing weight where the residual imbalance at the reference planes is within tolerance.

A device for measuring the characteristic angles and dimensions of wheels, steering system and chassis of vehicles in general, comprising a plurality of three-dimensional optical readers which are functionally connected to a computer and can be arranged peripherally to a vehicle whose dimensions and characteristic angles of wheels, steering system and chassis are to be measured in such a manner that each one frames at least one wheel of the vehicle for the three-dimensional acquisition of an image of the wheel, each three-dimensional optical reader being provided with at least one fixed target for the setting and calibration of the measurement device, at least one camera of each three-dimensional optical reader being arranged in such a manner as to frame clearly and directly at least one fixed target of another three-dimensional optical reader for the setting and calibration of the measurement device by three-dimensional acquisitions of the fixed targets.

Device and method for measuring the characteristic angles and dimensions of wheels, steering system and chassis of vehicles in general

A wheel balancing machine having a tire removing device includes a rotation shaft upon which a wheel is mounted and elements for fixing the wheel to the rotation shaft. The device further includes a plate fixed rigidly to the tire removing device, and a tubular element connected to the plate which rotatably accommodates the rotation shaft. The wheel balancing device further includes a plurality of sensors fixed to the plate. The sensors are connected to the tubular element and adapted to measure the forces that constrain the tubular element when the rotation shaft and the wheel are turning and provide a measurement of the forces generated by the dynamic imbalance of the wheel. The plate includes a plurality of slots. The tire removing device includes arms with ends that engage in the plurality of slots to rigidly fix the wheel balancing device to the tire removing device.

An apparatus for balancing a vehicle wheel simultaneously shows both dynamic imbalance and static imbalance. At least one corrective weight is attached to the wheel to correct the static imbalance. A residual static imbalance is then determined after attachment of the corrective weight. Finally, the corrective weight is adjusted to reduce the residual static imbalance.

A device for automatically locking wheels on a balancing machine which comprises: a rotating hollow shaft which supports, at one end, a flange for clamping a wheel in a cantilevered fashion; a secondary shaft which can perform a translatory motion within said hollow shaft by means of preloaded springs, so as to keep the secondary shaft shifted away from the clamping flange, thus locking the wheel; a pneumatic cylinder for the translatory motion of the secondary shaft towards the clamping flange, in order to allow the release of the wheel and, simultaneously, a further loading of the springs. For machines of this kind, the locking device according to the present invention has at least two gas springs which are parallel to the secondary shaft and are interposed between a pulley rigidly coupled to the hollow shaft and the free end of the secondary shaft, and a pneumatic cylinde with a stem which acts on the end of the secondary shaft which can preload the gas springs to allow the translatory motion of the secondary shaft towards the clamping flange and therefore allow wheel release. There are also provided stops for stopping the stroke of the secondary shaft and elastic elements for returning the secondary shaft and the stem of the piston to the initial position, thus allowing the gas springs to restore the locking of the wheel.

The balancing machine comprises a rotation shaft whereon the body to be balanced can be mounted, a supporting structure for the shaft, and a carrying member for the supporting structure, in the form of a resiliently flexible plate. Detector means are provided for detecting the vibration generated by the unbalance of the body to be balanced and transferred thereto through the resilient plate, and means for imparting rotation to the shaft.

The device according to the invention comprises operating means for imparting a periodic vertical oscillating movement to a motor vehicle suspension, first and second sensor means for transducting into corresponding electrical signals the instantaneous force transmitted to the suspension and the instantaneous displacements of the point of application of said oscillating movement to the suspension, first processing means for calculating and integrating over one cycle the scalar product of said signals and second processing means for dividing said integrated scalar product by a quantity proportional to the product of the oscillation frequency and the square of the oscillation amplitude.
