An absorbent element for the absorption of body fluids in sanitary articles comprises a first layer of sheet material presenting an array of hollowed formations () with respective mouth parts, as well as masses () of superabsorbent material that is able to expand as a result of the absorption of body fluid, which are set in the aforesaid hollowed formations (). A second layer of sheet material () is applied on the first layer of sheet material () so as to cover the mouth parts of the hollowed formations (). At least one of the layers of sheet material () is permeable to body fluids to enable the body fluids themselves to penetrate into the hollowed formations and be absorbed by the masses of superabsorbent material () that expand in the hollowed formations (), creating a first level of absorption of body fluids. The second layer of sheet material () is compliant in an area corresponding to the mouth parts of the hollowed formations () and enables further expansion of said masses of superabsorbent material () beyond said hollowed formations () so as to create a second level of absorption of body fluids. The first layer () and the second layer () of sheet material are connected to one another by adhesive formations () that leave the mouth parts of the hollowed formations () at least partially free.

A process is provided for making a fastening element for absorbent sanitary products having first and second parts that are symmetrical with respect to an intermediate plane, each part including a base branch connectable to the first part, and a distal branch connectable to the second part. The base branch and the distal branch are connected together according to a general book-like configuration. A dorsal part of the book-like configuration for connection between the base and the distal branches is set at a distance from said intermediate plane, the base branch connects the two parts to form a single body, each of which can connect mutually facing edges of the end parts of an absorbent sanitary product and to ensure the fastening of the flaps set on the sides. The fastening element can enable releasing and refastening the product and/or adjusting the fit of the product to the wearer's body.

A softened unperforated film and a perforated die which is generally cylindrical in movement are brought into contact and exposed, in a predetermined region, to a pressure gradient oriented radially of the die. Apparatus for the dry defibration of sheets of wood pulp cellulose and like materials comprises a tubular casing to which the sheets to be defibrated are fed substantially radially and a cylindrical rotor rotatably mounted within the casing substantially coaxially of the casing itself. The rotor has external teeth for impinging on the material to be defibrated. The rotor is constituted by a plurality of externally toothed discs and spacer members connected together in a pack in an arrangement in which the spacer members alternate with toothed discs. The general plane of each disc is at a predetermined angle to planes perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotor whereby, during rotation, the periphery of each disc describes a respective substantially cylindrical surface coaxial with the axis of rotation of the rotor. The distance between adjacent toothed discs and the angle of inclination of the discs are selected so that the substantially cylindrical surfaces described by adjacent discs at least touch each other.

A diaper comprises an outer sheet of waterproof plastic material having a deformed recess area between the sides and ends thereof which forms a pad receiving cavity which is bordered by marginal areas on each side and end. The cavity is about an inch deep and includes a bottom which is advantageously provided with corrugations or pleats which facilitate its expansion or distortion during wearing. An absorbent pad is disposed in the cavity, and a moisture holding strip of plastic material overlies at least a part of the marginal area on each side of the cavity and at least a portion of each side of the pad. The strip is welded to the marginal areas, and as a feature of the construction the plastic is stretched relative to the outer sheet and held in a stretched condition during welding so as to impart some resilient characteristics to the area which is adapted to be engaged around the legs of the wearer. Because the strip overlies the cavity, it aids in securing the pad in position and it insures that any liquid such as urine which may collect in the pad will not run out of the cavity.

A method and arrangement for making a sanitary product. A pocket is formed in a waterproof web of synthetic plastic material by plastically deforming a portion of the web by application of heat and/or pressure. The web is further provided with retaining straps for securing the sanitary product on the body of a user. The invention constitutes a diaper holder or panty in one embodiment and permits a user to refill the pocket with absorbent napkin as desired. In another embodiment, the absorbent napkin is permanently sealed in the pocket by juxtaposing and securing another web of water-permeable material onto the waterproof web.
