A printer architecture that enables a printer (or other media processing device) with an elongate foot print to be configured with media input and operator controls oriented at either a narrow end or a wide side thereof, that surface becoming the 'front' of the unit. Controls and/or display(s) are mounted such that either the end or side orientation can be accommodated. The media input tray includes a separate assembly so that selection of the tray with access to end or side complements the user control panel in establishing the front of the machine. The combination of control/display mounting and oriented media tray structure integration with the print engine to establish which of the printer surfaces is considered the front allows for multiple orientations of the printer and greater flexibility to the customer.

Printer architecture enabling narrow or wide front facing orientation

In one embodiment, a method of operating a permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) motor in a printer has been developed. The method includes identifying that a temperature of the PMDC motor exceeds an operating temperature of the motor without the use of a direct temperature sensor. The PMDC motor operates at a reduced printing rate to prevent the motor from overheating.

Indirect temperature monitoring for thermal control of a motor in a printer

A new media path includes a flexible member that cooperates with a control point for smooth transitions of media sheets along the path. The media path includes an elongated member having a first end and a second end, the elongated member having a longitudinal axis and a cross-member axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the elongated member having a first surface that is non-linear in at least one of the longitudinal and cross-member axes, and a bevel on a second surface of the elongated member, the bevel being proximate to the first end of the elongated member at a predetermined distance from the first end.

Apparatus for transitioning media sheets in a printer

An apparatus for transporting media in a printer helps reduce vibration and noise in the printer. The apparatus includes a pair of brackets secured to a printer surface, a shaft, a first portion of the shaft being secured within one of the brackets and a second portion of the shaft being secured within the other bracket, a roller mounted about the shaft for rotation about the shaft, and a pair of vibration dampeners, one vibration dampener being interposed between the first portion of the shaft and the one bracket, and the other vibration dampener being interposed between the second portion of the shaft and the other bracket.

Apparatus and method for reducing vibration and noise in a printer

A gear and a method for combining a first gear with a second gear including the steps of moving the first gear relative to the second gear such that a first tooth of the first gear contacts a second tooth of the second gear, pressing the first tooth of the first gear against the second tooth of the second gear such that a resultant force is not directed to a center of at least one of the first gear or the second gear, wherein a torque is created by the resultant force, and rotating at least one of the first gear or the second gear based on the created torque until first teeth of the first gear mesh with second teeth of the second gear.

Gear modification that enables direct off-center engagement

An image formation device having computer readable instructions that alleviate the necessity of the user to enter the correct page size into the image formation device. The computer readable instructions contain, among other things, a look-up table, or map, of known print media dimensions the image formation device is able to handle. The size of the media loaded into the image formation device is detected and assigned a value according to the look-up table, or map, of the computer readable instructions. The value is compared to the known types of media that are supportable by the printer. These types of media are grouped into predetermined categories according to their respective width dimensions. A determination of whether the image formation device performs a function is made based on the comparison of the converted value to the predetermined group of media.

Media size sense system and firmware algorithm for an image formation device

A sheet feeder and separator assembly for separating and sequentially feeding individual print media sheets from a stack thereof includes a frame having at least one bearing recess. A removable print media tray is carried by the frame. A separator is connected to the removable print media tray. A pick module assembly is removably connected to the frame adjacent the removable print media tray. The pick module assembly includes a pick roller adjacent the separator to form a nip and at least one flexible bearing is removably received in the at least one bearing recess to removably connect the pick module assembly to the frame.

Replacement method and assembly for paper pick rollers

A printer for generating an image on a media sheet has a printer body with a media path extending from a media supply in a downstream direction to a media exit. An output tray and a media ejection mechanism are connected to the printer body adjacent the media exit. The ejection mechanism has a number of drive roller pairs, each of which includes a first roller and a second roller contacting each other at a nip defining a nip plane. The first rollers of the respective roller pairs are coaxial with each other, and the second rollers of the respective roller pairs are coaxial with each other. The nips of the drive roller pairs occupy a common plane, and the drive roller pairs are spaced apart from each other to define a gap. The ejection mechanism includes at least one corrugation roller positioned in the gap, rotatable on a corrugation roller axis, and having a curved surface portion displaced from the nip plane.

A media sheet handling system and a method of duplex printing are disclosed wherein a media sheet is imaged with a phase change ink on both sides of the media sheet without smudging or remelting the images and the media sheet is partially exited from the printer into a media output tray and then is drawn back into the printer along a duplex path of travel that automatically reverses the media sheet so that the trailing edge becomes the leading edge during the imaging of the second side of the media sheet. The stiffness of the media sheet facilitates the media sheet moving above and beyond a stationary media path diverter prior to reversing its direction of travel along and passing along the duplex path of travel back to the imaging station.

Duplex printing media handling system

A blade actuating assembly is provided which permits selective reciprocal movement of a tissue cutting blade positioned at a distal end of an optical trocar assembly from a non-deployed position to a deployed position and back to a non-deployed position. The trocar assembly has an optical obturator which includes a sleeve having a longitudinal bore between a proximal end and a distal end. The longitudinal bore of the sleeve is configured to receive at least a portion of an endoscope or like image transferring system. An objective optical member, such as an optical window is positioned at the distal end of the sleeve and is provided to permit optical images to pass into the longitudinal bore of the sleeve and to permit illumination light to pass to the surgical site.

Optical trocar

A method of cleaning a media preheater that is positioned in the media path of a printer is disclosed. The media preheater has a fixed heater and a movable plate array biased toward the heater such that printer media passing between the plate array and the heater is compressed therebetween and heated. The preheater may be positioned upstream of a print head and downstream of a media advancing mechanism in the media path. More than one plate may be provided in the plate array to accommodate non-planarity of the heater or the printing media. The method elevates the temperature of the contact surface of the preheater to a cleaning temperature that is greater than the operating temperature and then passes a chase sheet over the surface to remove contamination from the preheater surface.

Method of cleaning a printer media preheater

A media preheater positioned in the media path of a printer and having a fixed heater and a movable plate array biased toward the heater such that printing media passing between the heater and the plate array is compressed therebetween and heated. The preheater may be positioned upstream of a print head and downstream of a media advancing mechanism in the media path. More than one plate may be provided in the plate array to accommodate non-planarity of the heater or the printing medium. The plate array may be a thermally massive element that contacts the heater when no media is present, thereby permitting the medium to be heated from both sides.

Printer media preheater and method

A surgical apparatus is provided for penetrating body tissue. The apparatus includes a cannula and an obturator configured for insertion into the cannula. The obturator has a body tissue cutting member mounted to a distal portion which is movable between deployed and non-deployed positions. An actuating mechanism is operatively associated with the tissue cutting member and is selectively controllable by a user so as to move the tissue cutting member between the deployed and non-deployed positions independent of the position of the obturator.

A surgical instrument for percutaneous accessing body tissue including a tissue piercing element for creating an opening through a body wall. The surgical instrument may include a working member for performing a surgical procedure within the body. Alternatively, the surgical instrument may include an introducer having a stabilizing structure for facilitating the passage of the tissue piercing element and for releasably affixing the surgical instrument to the body tissue surface, thereby securing the surgical instrument relative to the patient's body.

Percutaneous introducer

A device for positioning a surgical instrument having an elongated portion, the device comprising a housing having an opening therethrough to receive the elongated instrument portion and an actuation member mounted to said housing and movable between a first position and a second position. The actuation member overlaps a portion of said opening in said second position to prevent movement of the elongated portion of the instrument. The actuation member may be movable along a plane parallel, perpendicular or lateral to a longitudinal axis of the surgical instrument.
