The effect of a treatment on a rock sample or sub-sample extracted from the rock sample can be analyzed through computed tomography (CT). To determine the effect of a treatment of a rock sample or the sub-sample, pre-treatment and post-treatment CT images of the rock sample or the sub-sample are captured. Further, the pre-treatment CT images and post-treatment CT images of the rock sample or the sub-sample are compared based on one or more alignment markers added to the rock sample or the sub-sample. In some embodiments, pre-treatment and post-treatment CT scans of an extracted sub-sample provide higher-resolution information regarding the effect of the treatment. Further, pre-treatment and post-treatment CT scans of a rock sample with a restored sub-sample may be considered and may provide additional information regarding the effect of the treatment on the rock sample or the sub-sample.

Computed tomography (CT) systems and methods analyzing rock property changes resulting from a treatment

The present invention relates to a method and system for integrating logging tool data and digital rock physics to estimate rock formation properties. A rock sample from a logging tool such as a sidewall plug or large enough cutting can be extracted by the logging tool at approximately the same well bore location that the logging tool measures fluid properties. The rock samples thus obtained is scanned using a CT scanner, scanning electron microscope or other suitable scanning device. The resulting scanned rock image can be segmented and rock properties comprising porosity, absolute permeability, relative permeability, capillary pressure and other relevant rock properties are calculated. The resulting digital calculations are integrated with logging tool data and rock property estimates to improve the accuracy and timeliness of the logging tool data.

Method and system for integrating logging tool data and digital rock physics to estimate rock formation properties

A method and system for obtaining a consistent and integrated set of physical properties of a sample specimen of porous media, e.g., rock, in which a specimen is prepared for imaging. The specimen is imaged multiple times to yield a set of images that undergo a segmentation process to provide a digital representation of the sample specimen. The digital representation provides a view of the solid phase and pore space of the sample specimen. The digital representation may be used to determine a plurality of physical properties of the sample porous specimen, such that the sample porous specimen may remain intact throughout the method.
