A testing device to perform electrical arc testing on a workpiece. The testing device includes an electrode and an actuator mounted to the electrode. The actuator is configured to control a separation distance between the electrode and the workpiece. The actuator is further configured to oscillate the electrode and vary the separation distance to create a low voltage electrical arc when electrical energy is supplied to the electrode.

Methods of embedding an elongate susceptor within a thermoplastic body and systems that perform the methods are disclosed herein. The methods include extending the elongate susceptor such that an extended portion of the elongate susceptor extends between a guide structure and a body-contacting structure. The methods also include heating a segment of the elongate susceptor to produce a heated portion of the elongate susceptor. The methods further include pressing a leading region of the heated portion of the elongate susceptor through a body surface of the thermoplastic body and into the thermoplastic body. The methods also include operatively translating at least one of the guide structure, the body-contacting structure, and an application tool that includes the guide structure and the body-contacting structure along an embedment pathway for the elongate susceptor.

An apparatus is provided for peeling a liner away from a substrate. The apparatus comprises a first member rotatable about an axis. The apparatus also comprises a second member disposed on the first member and for generating a suction force to be applied to the liner to peel a portion of the liner away from the substrate when the suction force of the second member is applied to the liner and the first member is rotating about its axis. The apparatus further comprises a third member synchronized to rotation of the first member about its axis such that the third member clamps the peeled portion of the liner against the first member while the second member is applying suction force to the liner and the first member is rotating about its axis.

Apparatus and method for peeling a liner away from a substrate

A method for placing electrical conductors interior to a composite structure prior to curing. A laminate stack is formed by assembling one or more composite layers, wherein the composite layers are pre-impregnated with a resin. One or more electrical conductors are placed on at least one of the composite layers prior to curing the laminate stack. One or more electrical insulators is optionally placed in proximity to one or more of the electrical conductors in at least one of the composite layers prior to curing the laminate stack. The laminate stack, including the composite layers, the electrical conductors, and the electrical insulators, is then cured to create the composite structure.

A method for promoting electrical conduction between metallic components and composite materials. A composite body is coated with an adhering layer comprising a conductive material, and a metallic component is electrically connected to the conductive material of the adhering layer, when the metallic component is coupled to the composite body. The adhering layer is deposited inside a hole in the composite body, and/or along an edge of the hole, and/or on at least a portion of a surface of the composite body. The composite body is a structure of an aircraft or other vehicle comprised of composite materials formed from carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs), the metallic component is a fastener or is positioned at an interface between the fastener and the composite body, and the electrical connection is made as part of a lightning protection system, an electromagnetic effects (EME) management system, or grounding system.

Method for promoting electrical conduction between metallic components and composite materials

Systems, methods, and apparatuses for triggering electrical arcs are disclosed. Such arcs are useful for testing combustible fluids and equipment operating near ignition hazards. Arcs may be produced with a defined energy at a defined time with little variation in arc energy. Consistent production of arcs is facilitated by one or more of conditioned electrodes, control and/or reduction of parasitic capacitance, avoidance of corona sources, and non-interfering arc triggers. Electrodes may be conditioned by repeated application of conditioning arcs. Conditioned electrodes have relatively physically consistent and chemically consistent tips. Arc triggers may be charged particle sources such as light sources operating in cooperation with a target to produce free electrons proximate the electrodes.

A vacuum pump may comprise a grating, and a sublimation element. The grating may have a grating opening and a grating interior that may be bounded by at least one grating surface. The sublimation element may be located within the grating interior and may be configured to sublimate and form a reactive film on the grating interior upon heating of the sublimation element above the sublimation temperature. The reactive film may be effective to capture gas molecules entering the grating interior through the grating opening and contacting the reactive film.

A seal for attenuating energy from an electrical discharge across an interface may include a cover defining an inner volume containing a filled sealant including a semi-rigid sealant mixed with a filler having a multiplicity of discrete particles of different composition than the semi-rigid sealant such that the filled sealant is adjacent the interface when the cover is placed over said interface. A method for sealing an interface may include forming a cover defining an inner volume shaped to enclose the interface, forming a filled sealant including a semi-rigid sealant mixed with a filler having a multiplicity of discrete particles of different composition than said semi-rigid sealant, placing the filled sealant within said inner volume and placing the cover containing the filled sealant over the interface such that the filled sealant is adjacent the interface.

A braking system for a high speed, high load rotor operating in a vacuum and suspended by a magnetic field such as in a flywheel energy storage device includes a pair of calipers disposed on opposed sides of the rotor for actuating a pair of annular friction discs into engagement with opposed sides of the rotor. Each caliper includes a mounting ring on its outer edge and an inner shallow annular groove in which it disposed one of the friction discs. A circulating fluid under pressure is directed into each annular groove for urging each friction disc into engagement with one of the opposed surfaces of the rotor for safely bringing the rotor to a stop such as in an emergency. The circulating fluid removes the heat generated by the braking action, while the controlled pressure applied by the discs also controls the position of the rotor when static such as during initialization.

Methods and apparatuses to provide improved auxiliary damping for superconducting bearings in superconducting levitation systems are disclosed. In a superconducting bearing, a cryostat housing the superconductors is connected to a ground state with a combination of a damping strip of material, a set of linkage arms to provide vertical support, and spring washers to provide stiffness. Alternately, the superconducting bearing may be supported by a cryostat connected to a ground state by posts constructed from a mesh of fibers, with the damping and stiffness controlled by the fiber composition, size, and mesh geometry.
