The disclosure relates to processes and systems utilizing one or more extraction towers in the recovery and recycle of acid catalysts used in the production of carboxylic acids. The carboxylic acids may be neo-acids produced through the hydrocarboxylation of olefins or olefin mixtures.

Extraction towers and processes for using the same

Provided are compositions, processes for making, and processes for using neoalkyl polyol esters and triglycerides as plasticizers. In one form, a neoalkylester triglyceride plasticizers can be produced by (i) drying a polyol feedstream; (ii) contacting in a reactor the dried polyol feedstream with a neoacid feedstream under effective temperature, pressure and time to form a neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream, and (iii) purifying the neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream to remove unreacted polyol and unreacted neoacid to form a neoalkylester plasticizer. Such plasticizers can be phthalate-free and provide outstanding properties including a suitable melting or pour point, glass transition temperature, low volatility, increased compatibility, increased hydrolytic stability, and excellent low temperature properties in a range of polymeric resins.

Process for making polyol neoalkylester plasticizers from neo acids

Embodiments of the invention disclosed herein relate to a process for the production of a C-Calcohol mixture comprising the steps of: hydroformylating an olefin mixture comprising a branched C-Colefin to form a hydroformylation product comprising aldehydes and formate esters, whereby the hydroformylation product has a net cold sap number from 15 to 38 mg KOH/g, and converting the aldehydes and formate esters to alcohols in a hydrogenation step comprising at least one first hydrogenation reactor comprising a fixed bed of a heterogeneous sulphided bimetallic catalyst.

Plasticiser alcohol and production improvement

Oxo-alcohols in the plasticizer range typically contain small amounts of methyl esters having the same alkyl chain as the alcohol itself. These methyl esters are causing product quality problems and environmental problems because of transesterification in the esterification process where the plasticizer ester derivatives are produced. A process using controlled oxonation and hydrogenation conditions is disclosed for the production of alcohols containing low amounts of methyl esters. Plasticizer esters with low amounts of aliphatic di-alkyl esters are also disclosed.

Disclosed is a process for the production of esters. In particular, the process includes contacting an olefin or an ether with carbon monoxide and an acid composition comprising BF.2CHOH to from a product composition, adding an alcohol to the product composition, and separating the BF.2CHOH from the ester. The separated BF.2CHOH may then be recycled to the reaction unit.

Production of esters

A method for production of pivalic acid comprising the steps of: (a) reacting isobutylene, carbon monoxide, and a first catalyst to produce a reaction mixture; (b) contacting the reaction mixture with water, thereby producing a crude acid product having pivalic acid and oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid; (c) separating the pivalic acid and the oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid from the crude acid product; (d) reacting the oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid with a source of carbon monoxide at a temperature of less than 200&#xb0; C. in the presence of a second catalyst to produce a Ccarbocation product, wherein the first and second catalyst are either the same or different; and (e) reacting the Ccarbocation product with water; thereby producing pivalic acid having an overall yield of at least 80 wt. %.

Cracking of neo-C9 and neo-C13 carboxylic acids to either pivalic acid or methyl pivalate

A method for production of pivalic acid comprising the steps of: (a) reacting isobutylene, carbon monoxide, and a first catalyst to produce a reaction mixture; (b) contacting the reaction mixture with water, thereby producing a crude acid product having pivalic acid and oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid; (c) then separating the pivalic acid and the oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid from the crude acid product; (d) then reacting the oligomeric neo-carboxylic acid with a source of carbon monoxide at a temperature of less than 200&deg; C. in the presence of a second catalyst to produce a C carbocation product, wherein the first and second catalyst are either the same or different; and (e) reacting the C carbocation product with water; thereby producing pivalic acid having an overall yield of at least 80 wt. %.

A process for controlling the regeneration of boron trifluoride catalyst complexes in the production of carboxylic acids and other products using boron trifluoride hydrates as a catalyst. Catalyst strength is determined by measuring the electrical conductivity of the catalyst recovered from hydrolysis. If the conductivity is greater than a predetermined value, the hydrolysis water rate is reduced and if the conductivity is leas than a predetermined value, the hydrolysis water rate is increased. Conductivity is determined by a toroidal conductivity sensor and a control valve responsive to operation of the conductivity sensor serves to increase or decrease the flow rate accordingly.
