A radioaerosol delivery apparatus particularly adapted for the subsequent disposal of radioactively contaminated elements is described. The apparatus includes a shielding container including an outer shell and an inner shell supported within the outer shell. The inner shell is formed with an inner wall and an outer wall defining a space therebetween for receiving radiation shielding material. The inner wall is formed to provide a surface conforming substantially to the contour of the radioaerosol source and a surface conforming substantially to the contour of a portion of a transport manifold supported thereon. A removable cover including radiating shielding material is formed with a portion conforming generally to the contour of the transport manifold. The inner wall of the container and the cover define at least one opening therebetween to permit fluid communication from the transport manifold to a patient utilizing the apparatus.

Method and apparatus for coating the airways of the lung of a patient substantially uniformly with a mist formed by aspirating a liquid which includes restricting the maximum size of the particles of the mist to about 1.2 microns with the major portion of the particles being in the range of 0.056 microns to 1 micron causing the mist to behave as a gas, conduits for feeding the mist together with a gas containing oxygen to a patient to be inhaled during the normal breathing process, and valves connected with the conduits for diverting the exhaled mist and gas through a discharge path. By radioactively tagging the liquid prior to production of the mist, the uniform deposition of the mist throughout the entire lung without encountering heavy accumulations in the large airways and at branch points, enables the production of high definition image scans of the lung.

An improved nebulizer for substantially complete discharge of liquid before 'sputtering' occurs includes a housing having a mist outlet, and an aspirating structure including a nozzle having a base portion at one end thereof within the housing. The nozzle includes a nozzle outlet for discharge of gas under pressure within the housing at end of the nozzle opposite the base portion. The nebulizer further includes an inverted frusto-conical bottom wall disposed about the base portion of the nozzle away from the nozzle outlet, the bottom wall forming a liquid reservoir that drains towards the base portion of the nozzle. The aspirating structure also includes at least one passageway peripherally located with respect to the nozzle, the passageway communicating with the reservoir for aspiration of liquid from the reservoir in response to gas discharged from the nozzle to form a mist. A well that is in communication with the passageway is interposed between the bottom wall and the aspirating structure for collecting and concentrating liquid between the bottom wall and the aspirating structure to avoid 'sputtering' of liquid prior to substantially complete discharge of liquid from the nebulizer.

A manifold is described, for delivery of radioaerosol to a patient, having a pair of rigid conduits joined at one end to form a first connector and at the other end to form a second connector. A third connector is formed in the first conduit between the first and second connectors and a one way-valve is located between the first and third connector. A second one-way valve is located in the second conduit to permit exhalation by the patient.
