A system and method are provided for managing battery discharge during critical peak pricing (CPP) intervals. The method provides an alternating current (AC) client with a fluctuating AC grid demand, and a direct current (DC)-to-AC inverter having an input connected to a battery and selectable inversion power output levels connected to the AC client. In response to receiving a CPP warning for a first time interval, a present battery capacity state of charge (SoC) is determined. Also determined is a target peak demand for the AC client over a second time interval that includes the first time interval. The target peak demand defines a desired maximum threshold AC grid demand. In response to determining the present battery capacity SoC and the target peak demand, excess battery capacity is determined, and the excess battery capacity is used to supply auxiliary energy to the AC client during the CPP first time interval.

System and method for managing battery discharge during critical peak pricing intervals

A virtual thermostat system and method are provided. The method accepts commands via a virtual thermostat interface for establishing temperature set points for a plurality of zones. Energy consumption information is also accepted from a plurality of energy consumption units. Each unit consumes energy at an associated peak power to supply a controlled temperature medium to a corresponding zone. The method also accepts temperature measurements for each zone. Then, consumption commands are sent to each energy consumption unit in response to associated zone temperature set points, while insuring that a combined peak power of the energy consumption units is less than a maximum peak power threshold. In one aspect, the virtual thermostat accepts temperature measurements from a plurality of physical thermostats, each associated with an energy consumption unit. Then, consumption commands are relayed to the energy consumption units via associated physical thermostats.

A telecommunications system supports a variety of packet data services with throughputs ranging from low to high data rates. The system controls the user data transmission over a channel according to the user data throughput requirements of the application. By properly scheduling the time that particular transmission takes place, high data rate applications may be supported without the need for code aggregation, and low rate users may be supported without the requirement of multiple spreading factors. Base stations may transmit scheduling information to user devices in downlink time slots and user devices may transmit status information to base stations in uplink time slots.

A system and method are provided for answering Home Network telephone calls. The method comprises: receiving telephone calls addressed to a Home Network endpoint; routing the received calls from a gateway to the endpoint; and, automatically recording the received call at a telephone answering device (TAD). The call can be recorded by an endpoint, the gateway, or an external line service provider facility central office or web site. Telephone calls can be addressed to an endpoint from external communication media or another endpoint. Some aspects of the method include sending notification that a message has been recorded. The gateway may initiate the notification. Alternately, the gateway may receive a request for any TAD information that may exist for an addressed endpoint, and if a message exists, the TAD creates a bridge between the TAD and a requesting entity to forward the notification.

A system and method are provided for multiline telephony in a home-network telephone system. The method comprises: establishing a gateway; using the gateway for transceiving calls on a plurality of external telephone lines; and, bridging a call between a home-network endpoint and a selected external telephone line. Transceiving calls on a plurality of external telephone lines includes the gateway communicating call information in a format such as voice-over broadband (VoBB) or POTS. Bridging a call includes the gateway: converting between the external format and a digital home-network format; establishing a traffic channel between the gateway and the endpoint to communicate information in the home-network format; and, establishing an out-of-band control channel to manage the corresponding traffic channel.

A system and method are provided for a Home Network telephone answering device (TAD) to notify external systems of voice mail messages. The method comprises: receiving the message from a communication media; recording a voice mail message for registered Home Network endpoints; and, sending a notification of the recorded message from the TAD to a system external to the Home Network. The notification may include information such as the calling telephone number, the calling party's name, the time of the call, the addressed endpoint, and the length of the call. Some aspects of the method further comprise: converting the format of the recorded message to one that is compatible with the external system to which the notification is sent. Other aspects of the method further comprise: in response to the notification, receiving a request for the playback of the recorded message; and, supplying the recorded message.

System and method for external voice mail notification by a home network telephone answering device

A system and method are provided for controlling communications privacy in a Home Network telephone system. The method comprises: using a gateway to send and receive calls on at least one external telephone line; supplying privacy and public mode bridging options; and, selectively excluding bridges between external telephone lines and a plurality of Home Network endpoints. In response to the privacy mode being selected, the gateway bridges a call between a first external telephone line and a first endpoint, and prevents bridges between the first external telephone line and other endpoints in the system. Alternately, when the public mode is selected, the gateway bridges a call between the first external telephone line and the first endpoint; and permits bridges between the first external telephone line and other endpoints in the system. That is, while the call is bridged to the first endpoint, a bridge is added between the first telephone line and the second endpoint. The privacy and public mode bridging options are selected with respect to nodes. A node can be an external telephone line or an endpoint. That is, a privacy or public mode of operation can be selected for a first external telephone line, whether calls are received or originated through the Home Network telephone system. Likewise, a privacy or public mode of operation can be selected for a particular endpoint, regardless of whether the endpoint receives or originates the call.
