A first User Equipment (UE), a second UE, a first Radio Network Node (RNN), and methods therein for controlling interference between transmissions in a first system and transmissions in a second system. The first system comprises the first UE and the first RNN serving the first UE. The second system comprises the second UE and a second RNN serving the second UE. The first system has a first priority in a first part of a shared spectrum and the second system has a second priority in the first part of the shared spectrum, wherein the first priority is higher than the second priority. The method in the first UE comprises transmitting a signal to a second RNN that is to perform a downlink transmission to the second UE, which signal is configured to control the transmission of the second RNN.

To provide backward compatibility dedicated control channels use the modulation scheme used in current systems, for example GMSK modulation scheme. A plurality of quality values, each associated with the selected cell and one of the neighboring cells, are then determined from the collected data. A neighbor cell list is then generated for the selected cell by determining the highest quality values, and placing the handoff measurement channels of the neighboring cells associated with the highest quality values in the neighbor cell list.

Use of the method and system reduces the effects of making additional measurements on the efficiency of the MAHO process. A system operator may obtain signal level measurements for various purposes other than MAHO without adversely effecting the MAHO process.

In a cellular communication system, a method and apparatus are provided for allocating a channel for use on a connection between a base station and a mobile station in a cell, without making measurements of downlink interference. Throughout the system, uplink and downlink power levels are regulated so that, within each cell, their sum changes by an amount whose magnitude is substantially equal to the magnitude of change in path gain between the mobile station and the base station in that cell, and which sum is opposite in sign to the amount of change in path gain. This power regulation scheme assures that there will be a strong correlation between system-wide measurements of uplink and downlink interference. Therefore, with the power regulation scheme in place, each cell determines uplink carrier to interference (C/I) ratios for the free channels available for use in the cell and selects an acceptable free channel having a C/I value that is within a predetermined acceptable range. If uplink C/I on the acceptable free channel is greater than the uplink C/I value of a channel currently assigned to a connection, then an intra-cell handover is performed so that the connection will be reassigned to the acceptable free channel. This technique is useful for providing an adaptive channel allocation scheme to systems, such as analog cellular communications systems, in which downlink interference measurements cannot be made.
