A lubricant composition is provided which mitigates the negative effect of zinc in ZDDP with respect to wear on timing chains by using in contact with the timing chain a lubricant composition comprising an ashless zinc-free organophosphorus compound and optionally zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, together providing about 50 to about 1000 ppm phosphorus, preferably about 300-800 ppm phosphorus, and more preferably about 500-750 ppm phosphorus; less than about 350 ppm to lower than &#x3c;1 ppm zinc from ZDDP; and at least about 100 ppm molybdenum from an organomolybdenum compound (preferably molybdate ester); wherein the Mo:Zn ratio is at least about 0.2:1 and the Zn:P ratio is lower than or equal to about 1.1:1; or in the alternative an organomolybdenum compound providing between about 300-700 ppm molybdenum, in combination with ZDDP providing zinc between about 200-800 ppm zinc, wherein the ratio of Mo:Zn ratio is at least about 0.4:1 to about 3:1.

Lubricant additive for reducing timing chain wear

The present invention relates to an engine oil lubricant composition for use in internal combustion engines comprising one or more molybdenum containing compounds that deliver 1-1000 ppm molybdenum to the finished oil, one or more phosphorus containing compounds that deliver 25-650 ppm phosphorus to the finished oil, and one or more poly(meth)acrylate viscosity index improvers (VI improvers) that may or may not be functionalized, for improved fuel economy and turbocharger related deposits. In addition, the composition comprises an antioxidant system which is carefully balanced to provide improved fuel economy, comprising an aminic antioxidant, a phenolic antioxidant and an ashless dithiocarbamate. Additionally, the formulated oil may contain a dispersant poly(meth)acrylate, in addition to the PAMA VI improver, to reduce the amount of traditional succinimide dispersants.

Fuel efficient lubricating oils

There is disclosed a lubricating composition comprising a friction modifier and a base oil comprising less than about 3% by weight of tetracycloparaffins. Methods of making and using the composition are also disclosed.

Lubricant compositions

There is disclosed a composition comprising an alloy represented by the following generic formula (A)(B)(C)(D)( . . . ); wherein each capital letter and ( . . . ) is a metal; wherein A is a combustion modifier; B is a deposit modifier; C is a corrosion inhibitor; and D is a combustion co-modifier/electrostatic precipitator enhancer; wherein each subscript letter represents compositional stoichiometry; wherein n is greater than or equal to zero; and wherein the alloy comprises at least two different metals; and with the proviso that if the metal is cerium, then its compositional stoichiometry is less than about 0.7. There is also disclosed a fuel additive comprising an alloy; a fuel composition comprising the fuel additive composition; methods of making the fuel additive composition; and methods of using the disclosed alloy.

Nanoalloy fuel additives

A fully formulated lubricating oil, lubricated surface, and lubricant additive concentrates for lubricants providing reduced sludge formation. The fully formulated lubricating oil composition has therein at least one succinimide dispersant derived from a polyalkylene compound having from about 50 to about 85% vinylidene double bonds in the compound, a metal containing detergent, at least one wear reducing agent, at least one antioxidant, and a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound as a friction modifier. The lubricating oil composition is also substantially free of molybdenum compounds.

Titanium-containing lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition comprising a) an oil of lubricating viscosity having a viscosity index of at least about 95; b) at least one calcium detergent; c) at least one oil soluble titanium compound; d) at least one friction modifier; and e) at least one metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound. The composition has a Noack volatility of about 15 wt. % or less, and contains from about 0.05 to about 0.6 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent, titanium metal in an amount of at least about 10 ppm up to about 1500 ppm titanium from the titanium compound, and phosphorus from the metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. %.

Lubricated surfaces, lubricant compositions for lubricating a surface, and methods for increasing antiwear properties in lubricants. The lubricated surface is provided by a lubricant composition containing a base oil of lubricating viscosity and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound effective to provide an increase in antiwear properties of the lubricant composition greater than an increase in antiwear properties of the lubricant composition devoid of the hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound.

Additives and lubricant formulations having improved antiwear properties

Lubricated surfaces, lubricant compositions for lubricating a surface, and methods for reducing friction coefficients in lubricants. The lubricated surface is provided by a lubricant composition containing a base oil of lubricating viscosity and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound effective to provide a reduction in the coefficient of friction of the lubricant composition greater than a reduction in the coefficient of friction of the lubricant composition devoid of the hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound.

Additives and lubricant formulations for providing friction modification

A composition for use as an additive for fuels or lubricants. The composition includes a reaction product of a treated amine and a compound selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl succinic anhydrides, Mannich adducts derived from hydrocarbyl-substituted phenols reacted with formaldehydes, ethylene-propylene copolymers grafted with ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic groups, copolymers of unsaturated acids and polyolefins, and acid or ester functionalized hydrocarbon polymers. The reaction product is oil soluble and has a number average molecular weight ranging from about 900 to about 50,000 as determined by gel permeation chromatography. The treated amine includes an aliphatic or aromatic amine containing at least one primary or secondary amino group reacted with an aliphatic or aromatic nitrile and hydrogen.

Lubricant and fuel additives derived from treated amines

A method and compositions for lubricating surfaces with lubricating oils exhibiting increased antioxidant properties. The lubricated surface includes a lubricant composition containing a base oil of lubricating viscosity and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble metal compound effective to provide a reduction in oxidation of the lubricant composition greater than a reduction in oxidation of the lubricant composition devoid of the hydrocarbon soluble metal compound. The metal of the metal compound is selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, and manganese.

Additives and lubricant formulations for improved antioxidant properties

A lubricated surface and method for reducing wear between metal parts. The lubricated surface contains a base oil of lubricating viscosity and an amount of a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound effective to provide a reduction in surface wear greater than a surface wear of a lubricant composition devoid of the hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound.

Additives and lubricant formulations for improved antiwear properties

This invention relates to a novel multi-functional fuel and lubricant additive that provides dispersancy properties as well as viscosity index improver credit and, improved fuel economy. The invention further relates to concentrates, and to fuel and lubricating oil compositions containing said additive or concentrates. Finally, the invention provides methods for improving fuel economy, improving dispersancy, and for preparing the hybridized, acylated olefin copolymer useful as an oil additive.

Hybridized olefin copolymer additives

The invention relates to a lubricating oil composition having improved antioxidant properties, and which contains a molybdenum compound and an alkylated phenothiazine. Further, it may also include a secondary diarylamine, preferably an alkylated diphenylamine. This combination of additives provides improved oxidation control and friction modifier performance to the lubricating oil. The composition is particularly suited for use as a crankcase lubricant, or a transmission lubricant, including low levels and zero levels of phosphorus.

Antioxidant combination for oxidation and deposit control in lubricants containing molybdenum and alkylated phenothiazine

The lubricating oil of the present invention has a viscosity suitable for use in a diesel engine and includes at least one functionalized olefin polymer, and at least one zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). The ZDDP is made from a mixture of primary alcohols or a mixture of primary and secondary alcohols, wherein the lubricant has a high boundary film value greater than or equal to 15, and preferably greater than 60, as measured by using a High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR).

Diesel engine lubricants

It has unexpectedly been found that the combination of (1) an alkylated diphenylamine, (2) a sulfurized olefin/fatty oil and/or an ashless dialkyldithiocarbamate, and (3) an alkylated phenothiazine, is highly effective at controlling crankcase lubricant oxidation and deposit formation. The present invention includes lubricating compositions, lubricating additives, and methods for improving the antioxidancy and/or deposit formation properties of a lubricating composition.
