A method for detecting a faulty cooling unit in a set of cooling units configured to provide a coolant to work rolls arranged to process a work item therebetween, the method including: varying the flow rates of the coolant ejected from a sub-set of the cooling units; in response to varying the flow rates, determining a flatness variation value of the work item for at least each of the cooling units in the sub-set of cooling units, the flatness variation value being indicative of the work item flatness variation downstream of the work rolls; and detecting a faulty cooling unit based on comparing the flatness variation values to a reference flatness variation value.

Detection of faulty cooling units configured to provide coolant to rolling mills

A method and device for controlling a melting and refining process in an electric arc furnace for melting a metal, wherein the electric arc furnace includes molten and solid metal and a slag layer on the surface of the molten metal, wherein an electromagnetic stirrer is arranged for stirring the molten metal. The method includes calculating/determining masses of the molten and solid metal at a point of time, wherein the calculation is based on initial values of the molten and solid metal, an arc power supplied to the electric arc furnace, and temperatures of the molten and solid metal, determining a stirring power based on the calculated/determined masses, and supplying the determined stirring power to the electromagnetic stirrer.

Method and a control system for controlling a melting and refining process

A device for stabilizing an elongated steel sheet when continuously transporting the steel sheet in a transport direction along a predetermined transport path. The device includes at least a first pair, a second pair and a third pair of electromagnets with at least one electromagnet on each side of the steel sheet. The electromagnets are adapted to stabilize the steel sheet with respect to the predetermined transport path. The first and second electromagnets are elongated in a direction essentially perpendicular to the transport direction. The first and second electromagnets are substantially arranged on each side of a longitudinal center line for the steel sheet. The center line is essentially parallel to the transport direction. The third electromagnet is arranged adjacent to the center line.

Device and a method for stabilizing a steel sheet

A control system for regulating the flow of liquid metal in a device for casting a metal. A detector measures a process variable. A control unit evaluates data from the detector. At least one process parameter is automatically varied in order to optimize casting conditions. The detector measures a characteristic of the meniscus at at least two points on the meniscus instantaneously throughout the casting process.
