A high frequency voltage generator (10) produces a high positive voltage and a high negative voltage. A parallel connected coil (26) and diode (30) are connected between the high voltage supply and a target (44) of an x-ray tube (40). A second parallel connected coil (28) and diode (32) are connected between the negative voltage and an electron source (42) of the x-ray tube. The coils are preferably a multiple pancake design (FIG. 3 ). When the tube starts to arc, the sudden increase in current flow through the coil is converted and stored in a magnetic field leaving only a small current to contribute to arcing. The coils are sized such that the current which passes to the x-ray tube is sufficiently small that the arcing is usually extinguished without an avalanche phenomenon occurring. The diodes permit the energy stored in the magnetic field to be converted into a current flow through the coil and diode such that the energy is dissipated as heat by the inherent electrical resistance of the coil with only a minimal amount of the energy passing over time to the x-ray tube.

X-ray tube arc suppressor

An x-ray tube is disclosed whose cathode cup is battery biased at a low level, approximately 30 volts DC, to inhibit 'wings' on the focal spot of electrons bombarding the anode. The battery for providing bias, floats at the DC electrical potential applied to the cathode, many KV below ground potential. Geometric modifications to the filament/focusing cup arrangement are also included. The geometrical characteristics partially inhibit the dispersion of electrons, inhibiting the formation of 'wings' on the x-ray focal spot, particularly at high current levels. At lower current levels, the low DC battery bias enhances the anti-dispersion effects of the geometrical characteristics to inhibit wing formation even at these lower current levels.

An improved flux used for the recovery of metallic aluminum from dross in a reverberatory furnace. The flux is an alloyed mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride in approximately equal parts by weight which has been preheated and then cooled to form an alloyed mixture. A small amount of cryolite can be added to the liquid mixture before cooling to improve the recovery of metal obtained than when the salt and potash flux mixture is used alone.

This invention pertains to fluxes used in recovery operations for secondary aluminum. The flux herein is formulated in order to minimize the amount of chloride in the slag whereby it can be used as land fill without an adverse impact on the environment or in lieu of bauxite in the manufacture of aluminum or as source of aluminum oxide for the manufacture of aluminum or aluminum salts. The flux uses a combination of sodium chloride and aluminum chloride which form a double salt having vapor pressure sufficiently low to permit the aluminum chloride sublimation, without rapid sublimation, however, sufficiently high to permit the evaporation of chloride salts to provide low chloride slag. The improved flux also permits the heat cycle to be shortened by 10 to 20 percent thereby giving a measurable energy savings.

A technique for controlling severe chemical reactions which occur when salt containing furnace slags from secondary aluminum melting operations are brought in contact with water is provided. The technique which retards the formation and evolution of hydrogen gas resulting from the reaction of aluminum metal fines with water in the presence of chloride and the formation and evoluation of ammonia gas from the reaction of aluminum nitride with water is accomplished by controlling the pH of the water-solid slurry to be around 8. Consequently, the formation and gaseous evolution of hydrogen is controlled and the evolution of ammonia is eliminated with a concomitant elimination of explosion and fire hazards associated with the uncontrolled chemical reactions.

Oxygen sensor incorporating a thin film electrolyte such as yttria stabilized zirconia sputtered onto a substrate produces an electrical signal in response to differences in oxygen partial pressures. The electrical signal changes rapidly enough for useful operation at temperatures which are substantially lower than those required by conventional oxygen sensors having a rigid, self-supporting thimble, tubular, or disc type electrolyte. For example, rapidly responding signals have been generated at temperatures below 200.degree. C whereas state of the art devices such as those used for sensing exhaust gases in automotive vehicles require temperatures higher than about 400.degree. C.

Energy absorber for a solar collector assembly comprises an array of closely spaced, parallel tube portions having very high fins which present a large area of exposure to the source of radiation. The finned portions of the absorber are positioned between layers of thin, transparent plastic sheeting. The plastic sheeting contacts most of the circumference of the fins and defines generally closed cell portions between the side walls of adjacent fins which are evacuated so as to minimize convection type heat losses.

Measuring cell for determining oxygen concentration in a combustion engine exhaust stream utilizes a wafer or disc of stabilized ZrO.sub.2 as a solid electrolyte. A pair of concentric metal tubes having oppositely directed flanges contact electrode surfaces on the wafer and provide rugged electrical connections thereto. A pair of tubular ceramic sleeves positioned between the metal tubes electrically insulate the metal tubes from each other, seal (with the help of high temperature ceramic fiber gaskets) the wafer from leakage of exhaust gases to the reference side of the cell and space the wafer from the outer metal housing. The ceramic sleeves also maintain high temperature sealing and contact pressure between the tube flanges and the electrodes by virtue of the fact that they have a greater longitudinal length subject to temperature expansion than does the metal housing, thus making up for the fact that their temperature expansion coefficient per unit of length is lower.
