A method for reducing the emission of contaminants by a furnace is provided. The method includes forming a bed from a stream of fuel within the furnace; fluidizing the bed with flue gas from the furnace; and heating the fuel within the bed so as to generate char, ash and contaminants. The method further includes capturing the contaminants via the ash.

Hybrid boiler-dryer and method

A method of operating a furnace having a firing system is disclosed. The method includes providing a solid fuel to a sieve; separating the fuel into a portion and a second portion; providing a first portion of a flue gas to a first fuel dryer comprising a first duct; providing the first portion of fuel to the first duct, and drying the first portion of fuel therein; conveying the first portion of fuel through the first duct to the furnace; burning the first portion of fuel with firing system; conveying the second portion of fuel and a second portion of the flue gas to a second fuel dryer in a lower portion of the furnace, providing the second portion of fuel to a mill; pulverizing the second portion of fuel with the mill; conveying the second portion of fuel to the furnace; and burning the second portion of fuel.

A system for regulating the viscosity of a fluid prior to atomization includes a temperature controller configured to adjust a temperature of a fluid flowing in a conduit prior to atomization of the fluid by an atomizer fluidly connected to the conduit and a sensor in communication with the temperature controller such that the sensor can provide an indicator to the temperature controller of a viscosity of the fluid flowing in the conduit prior to atomization. An adjustment to the temperature of the fluid by the temperature controller is based at least in part on the measured viscosity indicator of the fluid, a target atomization-viscosity of the fluid, and a coking temperature of the fluid.

Disclosed herein is an ignition system for igniting a flame in a combustion chamber comprising a conduit secured to a windbox wall of the combustion chamber; where the conduit includes a fuel conduit for delivering fuel to the combustion chamber; and a single ignitor and flame rod assembly having a first end and a second end; where the first end comprises a high energy ignitor tip; where the second end is in electrical communication with an electrical power source; where the electrical power source comprises a spark transformer that comprises a primary winding and a secondary winding; a flame monitoring ignitor; where the flame monitoring ignitor is in direct electrical communication with a ground contact and with a low voltage side of the secondary winding; where the flame monitoring ignitor is disposed between the low voltage side of the secondary winding and a ground contact; and a transient voltage suppressor; that is disposed in parallel with the flame monitoring ignitor.

Disclosed herein is a method of controlling the operation of an oxy-fired boiler; the method comprising combusting a fuel in a boiler; producing a heat absorption pattern in the boiler; discharging flue gases from the boiler; recycling a portion of the flue gases to the boiler; combining a first oxidant stream with the recycled flue gases to form a combined stream; splitting the combined stream into several fractions; and introducing each fraction of the combined stream to the boiler at different points of entry to the boiler.

Apparatus and method of controlling the thermal performance of an oxygen-fired boiler

A method for more efficiently removing pollutant gases from flue gases of a solid-fueled steam generator includes storing a silo a carbonaceous sorbent in a powdered form; extracting a superheated steam from a superheated steam source; and reducing a temperature, pressure and moisture content of the superheated steam to provide a processed steam of a desired pressure, temperature and moisture content. The method further includes providing a sorbent mill receiving the carbonaceous sorbent and the processed steam, wherein the sorbent mill is operable to de-agglomerate and comminute the carbonaceous sorbent using the processed steam to provide a processed sorbent. Further the method includes injecting the processed sorbent into the flue gases at a desired location in the solid-fueled steam generator thereby adsorbing the pollutants therefrom; and collecting and thereby remove the carbonaceous sorbent from the flue gas fluidly downstream from the desired location.

Removal of mercury emissions

A system for removing gaseous pollutants, such as mercury from flue gases of a solid-fueled furnace (), includes a sorbent mill () that receives superheated steam and a sorbent (), such as activated carbon, in a partially agglomerated state, that processes the sorbent () by de-agglomerating and comminuting the sorbent (). An educator () transports the processed sorbent () to a distributor () that injects it into the flue gases at a contact location having a temperature between 500&#xb0; F. and 900&#xb0; F., whereupon the sorbent () adsorbs mercury from the flue gas. A particle collection device () removes the processed sorbent () having adsorbed mercury, from the flue gas.

A steam mill system for transport of powdered activated carbon (PAC) from a storage silo to a steam powered jet mill to produce milled sorbent for use in a coal-fired power plant flue gas for mercury control. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a cyclone separator arranged in a PAC transport line prior to a steam powered jet mill for separation of PAC according to particle size for the purpose of achieving reductions in associated compressed air usage, operating costs and capital costs.

Steam mill system useful for mercury control

A gas pipe ignitor is provided which is operable to ignite a non-premixed air and fuel mixture and includes an air supply conduit which has an axis ASL, a supply end , and a flame end axially spaced from the supply end . The gas pipe ignitor also includes a fuel supply conduit extending axially interiorly within at least a portion of the air supply conduit and having an entrance end and an exit end . The gas pipe ignitor further includes two branch passages each communicated with the fuel supply conduit . The gas pipe ignitor also includes a deflector body disposed in the air supply conduit and is configured relative to the air supply conduit such that air flowing in the air supply conduit flows along a pass through passage PTP from upstream of the upstream most surface of the deflector body to downstream of the deflector body . The entrance end of the fuel supply conduit is disposed axially upstream of the upstream most surface of the deflector body . The exit end of the fuel supply conduit is disposed relative to the deflector body and the air supply conduit at a location FSE downstream of the upstream most surface of the deflector body such that fuel flowing in the fuel supply conduit from its entrance end to its exit end is isolated from contact with air in the air supply conduit until exiting the exit end of the fuel supply conduit . The exit end of each branch passage is radially spaced from the exit end of the fuel supply conduit . The gas pipe ignitor also includes an ignition element , as seen in FIG. for promoting the ignition of the fuel which has exited the branch passages
