This invention provides an aromatic or cycloaliphatic triazole-based chemical embossing inhibitor which is completely soluble in water and compatible with water-based printing inks for use in producing textured foamed plastic surfaces. The triazoles comprise a general class of mono- and multi-functional 1-N substituted aminomethyl derivatives which are rendered soluble in water by the presence of at least one polyethyleneoxide (PEO) oligomer chain, or polypropylene (PPO)-polyethyleneoxide copolymer oligomer chain or PPO/PEO/PPO triblock oligomer chain with a sufficiently high PEO/PPO ratio for water solubility. Preferably the triazole derivative has at least six polyethylene oxide monomer moieties per triazole moiety.

The incorporation of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid terpolymer in the pigment particle containing decorative layer of a floor covering improves the cohesive strength of the pigmented decorative layer and adhesion of the decorative layer to the adjacent layers. The use of this vinyl terpolymer as the binder in the printed or coated decorative layer imparts improved bond strength particularly with platey pigments like pearlescents and metallics or in highly filled decorative layers containing titanium dioxide or other pigments.

Solid aromatic or cycloaliphatic azole-aldehyde addition products can be used as chemical embossing inhibitors. Most of the addition products can be readily micronized and dispersed into water-based printing inks for use in producing textured foamed plastic surfaces. These compounds comprise a general class of adducts of azole derivatives (benzotriazole and benzimidazole) reacted with aldehydes.

A high melting solid aromatic or cycloaliphatic azole-based chemical embossing inhibitor is essentially insoluble and inert in water and/or water alcohol mixtures. These solid azoles can be readily micronized and dispersed into water-based printing inks for use in producing textured foamed plastic surfaces. These compounds comprise a general class of 1-N substituted aminomethylaryl- or cyclohexyltriazole and imidazole derivatives. Some of the preferred compounds are symmetrical di-functional triazole derivatives and some of the preferred embodiments have a carboxy moiety or a sulfonyl moiety attached to a nitrogen atom.
