A downhole device is configured as a selectable hole trimmer. The selectable hole trimmer comprises an upper sleeve affixed inside a body via a stop. A charge sleeve is slidable inside the upper sleeve to provide a pressure to a pressurized volume. A catch sleeve is slidable inside the charge sleeve to align a bypass port and a return port with a drilling mud volume. An actuator is fluidly connected to the pressurized volume via a port. The actuator is configured to provide a pressure to a selectable hole cutter of the body via an actuation port in the transfer sleeve and actuate the selectable hole cutter piston of the selectable hole cutter to move relative to the body, wherein the cutter piston comprises one or more cutters. A manual controller configured to operate the actuator in response to a dropped activation ball.

Selectable hole trimmer and methods thereof

A downhole device and method to trigger, shift, and/or operate a downhole device of a drilling string in a wellbore is disclosed. At a high level, the disclosed device causes a portion of drilling fluids to bypass the drill bit and into the annulus. The bypass may be triggered upon certain conditions related to the rotation speeds of the drill string or other conditions such as the pressure of the drilling fluids. For example, the drill string may be rotated in some protocol of operation (e.g., stop at certain rpm, and/or stop at certain other rpm) to describe a recognizable series of signals to an accelerometer and/or microprocessor that will communicate to pumps or valves to operate or pause/stop operations.

Device and method to trigger, shift, and/or operate a downhole device of a drilling string in a wellbore

A rolling cone for use on an earth-boring tool includes a frustoconical surface at a proximal end of the rolling cone and an outer surface located distally of the frustoconical surface. The outer surface has a circumferential land surface adjacent the frustoconical surface. The rolling cone includes at least one gage cutting element affixed to the circumferential land surface. A portion of the at least one gage cutting element extends into the frustoconical surface. The at least one gage cutting element includes a volume of superabrasive material disposed on a substrate. A flat surface of the volume of superabrasive material intersects a front cutting face of the volume of superabrasive material. The flat surface is oriented at an acute angle relative to the front cutting face and is located on a side of the at least one gage cutting element that extends into the frustoconical surface of the rolling cone.

A method of improving the service life of a drill bit comprises creating a weldment between load bearing portions of the drill bit where the weldment has a preselected root gap greater than about 25 mils and a preselected root face greater than about 25 mils, and where the weldment has a material property greater than the materials being joined.

Expandable reamers for enlarging a borehole in a subterranean formation include a tubular body, at least one curved blade track carried by the tubular body, and at least one blade engaged with the at least one blade track and configured to slide along the curved blade track along a curved path between a first retracted blade position and a second expanded blade position. To form such an expandable reamer, a tubular body having at least one curved blade track carried by the tubular body may be formed, and at least one blade may be engaged with the blade track. The blade and blade track may be configured such that the blade slides along the blade track along a curved path between a retracted position and an expanded position. Such expandable reamers may be used to enlarge boreholes in subterranean formations.
