A process for preparing glycosides from a source of saccharide moiety and an alcohol in the presence of a hydrophobic acid catalyst is provided. An example of such a catalyst is dinonylnaphthalenemonosulfonic acid. The use of such catalysts provides a number of process advantages, which includes the reduced production of polar by-products. Preferred glycosides produced by the process are higher alkyl glycosides useful as surfactants.

Process for production of glycosides

Undesired hydrophilic materials are readily removed from long chain hydrophobic alcohols, from long chain hydrophobic alcohol/glycoside surfactant mixtures and from solutions of glycoside surfactants in water immiscible solvents resulting from dissolving the glycoside surfactants in said solvents or mixing aqueous mixtures of glycoside surfactants with said solvents, by contacting the hydrophilic material containing hydrophobic composition with water in an amount, and for a time period sufficient, to extract at least a portion of the hydrophilic material from the hydrophobic composition and to form a separate aqueous phase and by separating the resulting aqueous phase from the hydrophobic composition. The process is particularly useful when employed in the context of a glycoside surfactant manufacturing process to remove polysaccharide by-products from a crude unreacted hydrophobic alcohol/glycoside surfactant reaction product mixture at a stage prior to the separation of the hydrophobic alcohol from the glycoside surfactant.

Removal of water miscible materials from glycoside mixtures

A process for preparing alkylglycosides by reacting an 8 to 20 carbon atom monohydric alcohol with a monosaccharide in the presence of an acid catalyst, while under partial vacuum, followed by neutralizing the reactant product with an alkaline metal hydroxide in an amount about equal on a molar basis to the amount of catalyst, and removal of the residual unreacted alcohol.

Process for preparation of alkylglycosides

The invention is a process for preparing a glycoside product by reacting an alcohol having 4 to 30 carbon atoms with a saccharide or oligosaccharide in the presence of an acid catalyst wherein an undissolved phase comprising the saccharide or oligosaccharide is present in the reaction mixture during the process.

Process for the direct production of glysoside product in the presence

A multi-step process is provided for solubilizing and saccharifying granular starch slurries of between 20 and 60% d.s. starch. In a first step, an enzyme mixture exhibiting raw starch hydrolyzing activity is added to the slurry and maintained in contact therewith until at least a substantial portion but less than all of the starch is solubilized. The resulting syrup is separated from the remaining insoluble fraction. In a second step, the insoluble fraction is used to prepare a second slurry containing less than about 20% d.s. starch, and this second slurry is solubilized with a raw starch hydrolyzing enzyme preparation until substantially all (e.g., at least about 95% or more) of the starch is solubilized. The pooled syrup from the two steps is over about 20 weight percent saccharides, at least about 95% of which is glucose.

Raw starch saccharification

There is disclosed a process for enzymatically hydrolyzing a non-gelationized granular starch material directly to glucose. In another embodiment, granular starch remaining non-hydrolyzed following a direct, granular starch hydrolysis process and having liberated fat and/or protein residues coated, adsorbed or otherwise accumulated thereon is pasted, thinned separated from said fat and/or protein residues and recycled to said granular starch hydrolysis process for further hydrolysis to glucose therein.
