Described herein are various embodiments of a valve that may be opened and closed using a thixotropic or 'stress yield' material, or other material that temporarily changes phase upon application of energy to the material. More particularly, some embodiments may include a valve that is opened and closed using a granular gel that is a temporary phase change material.

A robotic vehicle can include a plurality of motors coupled to a plurality of gearboxes, each gearbox of the plurality of gearboxes configured to be rotated, a plurality of nested driveshafts coupled to the plurality of gearboxes and including at least a first driveshaft and a second driveshaft, and a plurality of appendages operably coupled to the plurality of gearboxes. A particular appendage of the plurality of appendages can be configured to be rotated in response to a rotational motion of the first driveshaft. The robotic vehicle can include a plurality of wheels coupled to the plurality of appendages and configured to rotate about a plurality of wheel axles. Each wheel of the plurality of wheels can be configured to cause the robotic vehicle to be transported across a contacting surface in response to the rotational motion of the second driveshaft.

Various embodiments provide a ground-engaging vehicle braking assembly for a vehicle. The assembly generally comprises: a base subassembly mounted to a portion of the vehicle; a common member comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion of the common member being rotatably attached to the base subassembly; a first linkage subassembly comprising the first portion of the common member; and a second linkage subassembly comprising the second portion of the common member and a pad member, the pad member being configured to engage a ground surface over which the portion of the vehicle is travelling. An associated method of operating the assembly is also provided, wherein multiple modes of operation are incorporated. A system is also described, wherein at least one processor is configured to move various linkage subassemblies of the assembly based upon one or more predetermined parameters related to mode of operation.

Ground-engaging vehicle braking system and methods for using the same

An improved structure and method for building large-aperture lightweight deformable mirrors uses a hinged substrate. In addition to reduced weight, the approach provides rigidity to the mirror, which is necessary for the accurate response to actuator commands and tolerance to disturbances. No stresses are induced in the substrate due to the commanded deformation of the substrate, regardless of the magnitude of the deformation. Any stresses in the substrate structure are those induced due to forces in the face sheet, which are likely to be small using advanced nano-laminate and membrane face sheet technologies. The magnitude of the deformation (dynamic range) is limited only by the actuator stroke, and not by the stresses induced in the substrate. The design therefore accommodates small-force, large-stroke actuators, as opposed to the current designs that use large-force, small-stroke actuators. The invention finds utility in numerous applications, including lightweight large aperture mirror substrate and RF reflector structures.

A screw motion-driven tensegrity antenna support architecture is configured to stably deploy and adjustably control an energy-focusing surface, such as an RF wave-reflecting conductive mesh. A parallel platform structure is configured of an upper hexagonal platform and a lower hexagonal base, the perimeter geometry of each of which is defined by plural interconnected tensioned ties. Vertices of the hexagonal tie base and the hexagonal upper tie platform are interconnected by pairs of legs, each including a compression strut and a tension tie. The stability of the structure requires that the sum of the tie tension forces matches the sum of the compression forces in the struts. To control deployment from a stowed condition and the geometric parameters of the deployed RF reflecting surface, a screw motion-based drive system is coupled to the struts to define relative mutual rotation and pitch between the upper platform and lower base.
