An electrical assembly including a power converter having an AC side and a DC side, the AC side for connection to an AC network; at least one power transmission medium connected to the DC side of the power converter; a dynamic braking system operably connected to the power transmission medium, the dynamic braking system including a dynamic braking control unit programmed to selectively control activation of the dynamic braking system to carry out a dynamic braking operation; a monitoring unit for monitoring an electrical parameter of the AC network; and a processing unit programmed to determine an operating state of the AC network from the monitored electrical parameter, wherein the dynamic braking control unit is programmed to be responsive to the determined operating state of the AC network by configuring the dynamic braking system to be activatable.

A bipole power transmission scheme includes a first converter station positioned in-use remote from a second converter station, and first and second transmission conduits to in-use interconnect the first converter station with the second converter station and thereby permit the first converter station to transmit power to the second converter station. The first converter station includes a first power converter, a second power converter, and a converter station controller which is programmed to selectively transition the bipole power transmission scheme into an asymmetrical monopole configuration, while maintaining the transfer of power from both the first and second power sources.

An electronic valve apparatus for a high voltage direct current, HVDC, power transmission system. The electronic valve apparatus includes a first device chain including a number of first devices connected in series between an input node and an output node. Each of the first devices has an asymmetric transfer function configured substantially to block current flow through the device in a first direction, and the first devices are connected such that they all block current flow in the same direction. The electronic valve apparatus also includes a second device chain including a number of second devices connected in series between the input node and the output node. Each of the second devices has an asymmetric transfer function configured substantially to block current flow through the device in a first direction, and the second devices are connected such that they all block current flow in the same direction.

There is provided an electrical assembly for use in a power transmission network. The electrical assembly includes a converter including terminals for connection to an electrical network, where the first terminal is a DC terminal. The assembly also includes a DC power transmission medium connected to the DC terminal, and a circuit interruption device including switching element(s) and an energy absorption element, each switching element being switchable to divert a flow of current in the DC power transmission medium through the energy absorption element in order to reduce the flow of current in the DC power transmission medium; The assembly also includes a converter control unit programmed to operate the converter to control a DC voltage at the DC terminal in a leakage current reduction mode to control a voltage across the energy absorption element.

Alternate arm converter

In the field of line commutated converters, for use in high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission, a line commutated converter comprises a plurality of converter limbs that extend between first and second DC terminals. Each converter limb includes first and second limb portions which are separated by an AC terminal. The first limb portions together define a first limb portion group and the second limb portions together define a second limb portion group. Each limb portion includes at least one switching element that is configured to turn on and conduct current when it is forward biased and it receives a turn on signal and to naturally turn off and no longer conduct current when it is reverse biased and the current flowing through it falls to zero. The converter also includes a control unit.

A power transmission network includes converters interconnected via electrical elements, at least one power flow router, and a controller. Each power flow router being operatively connected to the electrical elements, each power flow router configured to selectively control current flow in the electrical elements so as to direct power between two or more of the plurality of converters. The controller configured to selectively control the converters and each power flow router to control power flow in the power transmission network The controller is configured to carry out a mathematical optimisation to determine optimal operating set points of the converters; after carrying out the mathematical optimisation, carry out another mathematical optimisation to determine optimal current flows in the electrical elements; and control the converters in accordance with each determined optimal operating set point, and control the power flow router(s) to achieve each determined optimal current flow in the electrical elements.

The DC network further including: an active power electronic device connected in at the DC transmission paths, the active power electronic device; a detector configured to detect faults in the DC transmission paths; and a control unit programmed to operate the active power electronic device to vary an apparent impedance of a faulty DC transmission path to force a current flowing in the faulty DC transmission path to reduce to a target current level, and operate the switching apparatus to block current from flowing in the faulty DC transmission path when the current flowing in the faulty corresponding DC transmission path is reduced to the target current level.
