A coated cutting tool having a substrate and a surface coating, wherein the coating includes a Ti(C,N) layer of at least one columnar fine-grained MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer with an average grain width of 0.05-0.2 &#x3bc;m and an atomic ratio of carbon to the sum of carbon and nitrogen (C/(C+N)) contained in the MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer is in average 0.50-0.65.

A cutting insert for cutting, milling or drilling of metal includes a sensor for detecting a predetermined wear of the cutting insert caused by operation thereof on a metal work piece, wherein the sensor includes at least two contact regions through which the sensor is connectable to external measuring circuitry. The sensor has at least two leads, which are connected to a respective of the at least two contact regions, wherein each lead presents a respective free end positioned such that, upon the predetermined wear caused by the operation of the cutting insert on a metal work piece, the free ends will be connected to each other by the metal work piece or by a chip resulting from the operation of the cutting insert on the metal work piece.

A coated cutting tool for chip forming machining of metals includes a substrate having a surface coated with a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) coating. The coated cutting tool has a substrate coated with a coating including a layer of &#x3b1;-Al2O3, wherein the &#x3b1;-Al2O3 layer exhibits a dielectric loss of 10&#x2212;6&#x2264;tan &#x3b4;&#x2264;0.0025, as measured with AC at 10 kHz, 100 mV at room temperature of 20&#xb0; C.

CVD coated cutting tool

A coated cutting tool includes a substrate having a rake side, a clearance side and a cutting edge and a coating comprising a first layer and a second layer. The second layer has a sandwich structure of an inner layer, an intermediate layer and an outer layer, wherein the inner layer is exposed through an opening in the outer layer, the opening extending over at least a portion of the width of the cutting edge. Thereby, a double layer is provided in critical areas, whereas a single layer is provided in other areas. The double oxide layer is an aluminum oxide layer. A method for manufacturing the coated cutting tool is also provided.

A method for manufacturing the coated cutting tool includes depositing the MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer.
