Strands of chemically treated glass fibers of the present invention result in fiber reinforced polar thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers having good strength properties. The chemically treated glass fibers are treated with the an aqueous chemical treating composition having an epoxy polyurethane copolymer or a polyepoxide resin with blocked polyisocyanate functionality, and at least one or more organo coupling agents. The epoxy polyurethane copolymer or epoxy with polyisocyanate functionality can be chain extended with organic polyols. The blocked polyisocyanates can be either partially or fully blocked. Also the aqueous chemical treating composition can have one or more cationic and/or nonionic fiber lubricants, epoxy polyvinly acetate copolymer in conjunction with an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer or an epoxy polymer and mixtures of the fiber lubricant with the polymeric materials.

Strands of chemically treated glass fibers of the present invention result in fiber reinforced polar thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers having good strength properties. The chemically treated glass fibers are treated with the an aqueous chemical treating composition having an epoxy polyurethane copolymer or a polyepoxide resin with blocked polyisocyanate functionality, and at least one or more organo coupling agents. Glass fiber strands are produced which have a reduced tendency for strand to strand adhesion and good dispersibility or wettability in uncured polymeric materials for the production of glass fiber reinforced plastics. The glass fibers have a dried residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition. The aqueous chemical treating composition has a film forming polymeric system, gamma methacryloxy alkyltrialkoxy silane and a glass fiber lubricant in an effective lubricating amount. The film forming polymeric system has an epoxy-containing polymer or copolymer, a non-tacky film forming polymer, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone of which are aqueous soluble, dispersible or emulsifiable. The amount of the epoxy-containing polymer or copolymer is in the range of about 50 to about 70 weight percent of the solids of the aqueous chemical treating composition while the amount of the polyvinyl pyrrolidone does not exceed 25 weight percent of the solids of the aqueous chemical treating composition and the amount of the non-tacky film forming polymer is in the range of about 5 to about 20 weight percent of the aqueous chemical treating composition.

Treated glass fiber strands with improved processing characteristics such as payout and reduced fuzz and fly in forms such as continuous glass fiber strands, chopped glass fiber strands or mats of continuous glass fiber strands, chopped glass fiber strands or mixtures thereof are useful in reinforcing thermoplastic polymers. The treated glass fiber strands have on the glass fibers comprising the glass fiber strand an aqueous treating composition or a dried residue thereof. The aqueous treating composition has a vinyl-containing coupling agent in an amount of at least 0.05 weight percent of the aqueous composition, an epoxidized thermoplastic polymer or copolymer having about 1 to about 12 parts of epoxy to about 100 parts of the copolymer, an organo-reactable silane coupling agent in an unhydrolyzed and/or partially hydrolyzed condition or an interaction product of the epoxidized polymer or copolymer and organo-reactable silane coupling agent, and a glass fiber lubricant. Alternatively, the aqueous sizing composition may also have a crosslinkable film forming polymer. The treated glass fiber strand has an amount of the treating composition of at least about 0.3 weight percent of the treated strand.

Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics

A method is provided for producing a more stable emulsion of a polyester resin having carboxyl functionality and an amino-functional silane coupling agent that is incorporated into a sizing composition for treating glass fibers. The method involves reacting the polyester resin having carboxyl functionality with the amino-functional silane at ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressure then diluting the reaction product of the polyester resin and silane to obtain a more stable emulsion. The emulsion is then incorporated into a sizing composition by the addition of typical sizing additives to produce a more stable sizing composition.

Method of preparing a sizing composition for treating glass fibers

Glass fiber sizing compositions and methods of making same and glass fibers containing dried residue of the sizing composition are provided that yield improved efficiencies, reduced migration, reduction in drying conditions, reduced cleaning time and improved housekeeping. The sizing composition, method and glass fiber strand involves the use of a high solids sizing composition having a water solubilized, condensation, cross-linkable, unsaturated polyester resin having free carboxyl groups either pendant or terminal or pendant and terminal and an amino-containing silane and an amount of water to yield a sizing composition having an amount of total solids in the range of about 18 to about 40 weight percent. In addition, other additives can be included in the sizing composition such as additional polyester resins, additional coupling agents, thermoplastic polymers, anti-static agents, film-former modifiers, wetting agents, stabilizers and lubricants.

An apparatus for producing glass fibers is disclosed. The apparatus includes means associated with a cover means for an applicator for moving the glass filaments from the surface of the applicator when waste filaments are being produced such that the glass filaments are brought into contact with the application surface for coating the filaments with a binder and/or size only when production quality strand is being produced. This substantially reduces binder and/or size consumption and prevents the operator of the forming position from coming into physical contact with the binder and/or size coated strand.
