A bail element (10) having a medial portion (12) with a pair of legs (14, 16) extending integrally therefrom and a mechanical expansion anchor having a pair of shell halves (68, 70) and tapered plug (80) held in assembled relation by the bail. The bail legs are identical to one another and, prior to assembly with the shell halves and plug, have three distinct, linear portions (46, 48, 50) respectively extending at preferred angles of about 10.degree., 36.degree. and 12.5.degree. with respect to lines parallel to the bail centerline (A--A). The bail medial portion includes a pair of upstanding portions shown in a first embodiment (34, 36) and a second embodiment (54, 56) for puncturing a resin cartridge which may be installed with the anchor.

Mine roof expansion anchor and bail element

A threaded fastener and method of fabrication thereof wherein the fastener or nut includes a first portion having external, wrench-engaging surfaces and a central, through bore, internally threaded for at least a portion of its length from a base surface. A wall portion extends integrally from the end of the first portion opposite the base surface, concentrically surrounding and spaced radially outwardly from the end of the bore. The first and wall portions are formed as a metal casting with the wall portion in two segments separated by longitudinally extending, V-shaped notches. The free edges of the wall segments, which initially lie in a plane normal to the axis of the bore, are deformed by a die, moving radially inward so that the wall segments are in a domed configuration with the free edges defining a substantially oval opening having a major axis with a length about equal to the diameter of the bore and a minor axis about 4/5 that of the major axis. A method of supporting a mine roof using such a threaded fastener with a bearing plate, resin cartridge and elongated rod having threads mating with the internal threads of the bore is also disclosed.

An expansion shell assembly of the type including a pair of unitary expansion shell elements, each having two leaf members joined adjacent their lower ends by bridge portions with a bail fixedly attached at terminal ends to outer surfaces of the bridge portions to maintain the expansion shell elements in assembled relation. The bridge portions include a recessed area extending continuously between its upper and lower edges. The recessed areas are divided into two portions, with the lower portions substantially narrower than the upper portions, wherein terminal ends of the bail are secured. Opposing edges of the shell elements are in spaced, substantially parallel relation with the space therebetween free of any structure extending into such space over the full axial length of the shell elements. Relieved areas extend into the inner surfaces of the bridge portions to provide a clearance for the lower end of a tapered camming plug which is moved between the shell elements to effect radial expansion thereof.

Mine roof expansion anchor

A one-piece, malleable iron, expansion shell, and a leaf of such shell, for use in an expansion to be installed in a relatively small (about 1') diameter bore hole with a conventional size (5/8') bolt. The expansion shell, and individual shell leaves have unique features contributing to the effectiveness of the anchor when used either with or without a resin grouting mixture. The slots or spaces between adjacent shell leaves include upper and lower portions, each of constant width, the lower portion being wider than the upper portion, whereby the leaves are narrower in the area where they are bent outwardly from the closed ring at the base than in the area where they are compressionally engaged between the plug and the hole wall. Upper portions of the inner leaf surfaces taper toward the shell axis and the side edges of such surfaces taper toward one another from the upper, free ends of the leaves toward the lower ends. A first group of gripping teeth or serrations on the outer leaf surfaces near the lower ends of the leaves are deeper than a second group outwardly adjacent the plug contact area.

A two-piece, malleable iron, expansion anchor for installation in a relatively small (about 1') diameter bore hole with a conventional size (5/8') bolt. The four-prong expansion shell, camming plug, and individual shell leaves each have unique features contributing to the effectiveness of the anchor when used either with or without a resin grouting mixture. A resin reinforced expansion anchor system for a mine roof support bolt or the like utilizes a specially configured, thin-walled expansion shell together with a thin-walled, dual-taper plug for expanding the shell. The shell and the plug cooperate to implement a particularly desirable type of mechanical expansion anchoring action while simultaneously providing a symmetrical array of resin flow passages at circumferentially spaced locations about the anchor assembly to permit proper distribution and flow of a quick setting resin mix. The system of the invention enables a relatively large diameter rock bolt or threaded bar to be securely anchored in a blind drilled hole that is of relatively small diameter, with the anchoring action of a mechanical expansion anchor assembly being desirably augumented by the anchoring action of a concurrently established resin bond. The system of the present invention has particular utility in providing a means for effecting combined mechanical expansion anchoring and resin bond anchoring of a relatively large diameter threaded member such as a 7/8' rock bolt that is installed in a relatively small diameter hole such as a 13/8' blind drilled hole that is formed in a mine roof or the like.

Resin reinforced expansion anchor system

A nut element having a frangible portion for use with an elongated bar having an upper end anchored by a resin material within a drill hole in a mine roof, or the like, and a lower end extending outside the hole and threaded to receive the nut element of the invention. The nut includes a portion spaced from the threaded opening which limits relative rotation of the nut and bar. Thus, rotation of the nut with the lower end of the bar contacting the rotation-limiting portion thereof serves to rotate the bar within the drill hole, causing the upper end of the bar to rupture a conventional two-compartment resin cartridge and mix the contents thereof. When the resin has hardened to hold the bar stationary, excess torque applied to the nut serves to break the rotation-limiting portion thereof, preferably a dome-shaped cap with an opening of smaller diameter than the threaded end of the bar, allowing the nut to be snugly secured against a roof support plate and tension the resin-anchored bar.

Method of supporting a mine roof using nut element with breakable portion

An expansion anchor including an expansible shell and tapered nut for insertion into a drill hole in a rock formation and adapted for outward expansion of the shell into gripping engagement with the drill hole wall to support a rock bolt and bearing plate engaging the rock formation surface around the hole. The invention resides in a novel arrangement of dimensional and structural relationships of the expansion shell and tapered nut which allow the same anchor to be used in drill holes over a range of diameters approximately three times that of conventional prior art anchors of the same general type.

Rock bolt expansion anchor having windened expansion range

An adjustable height gauge for use in hair cutting. The gauge is worn on the thumb, much like a ring, and includes a platform of adjustable height that supports the index finger of the same hand. The index finger and middle finger are used to grasp a section of hair and then the gauge is placed under the index finger in contact with the scalp and hair extending beyond the fingers is cut off. This device allows a person to cut his or her own hair by feel to any desired series of lengths for shaping and grooming.

Thumb hair gauge

A mine roof bolt and expansion anchor are provided with means preventing relative rotation of the two in a direction tending to withdraw the bolt from the tapered nut of the anchor while allowing relative rotation in the opposite direction, whereby the bolt may be rotationally advanced into the nut as the anchor remains rotationally stationary to effect expansion of the anchor shell within a drill hole. A conventional, two-compartment resin cartridge is inserted into the drill hole ahead of the end of the bolt carrying the anchor. The cartridge is ruptured and the contents thereof mixed by advance of the bolt and anchor while rotating in the direction preventing relative rotation. Immediately thereafter the bolt is rotated in the opposite direction, thereby expanding the anchor and firmly securing it in the hole. The bolt may then be immediately loaded without regard to the setting time of the resin. Three embodiments are disclosed of the means providing the aforementioned relative rotational action. In one embodiment stop means are associated with the tapered nut for engagement by a pin extending from the threaded end of the bolt only when the latter is rotated in the direction tending to withdraw it from the nut. In a second, the stop means are associated with the base of the expansion shell and are engaged by radially extending ears on the bolt. In the third embodiment, the expansion shell is conventional in all respects and a separate collar member is carried upon the bolt shaft for engaging portions of the shell and providing the desired rotational relationships of bolt and anchor.
