The state of polarization of an input light beam is tested by determining four components of a Stokes vector of the light. These correspond to components of the light in three polarization states, S.sub.1 : linear horizontal, S.sub.2 : linear at 45 degrees, S.sub.3 : right circularly polarized, and S.sub.0 the total power. It is not necessary to filter out these components directly and measure their powers. In accordance with this invention it is more convenient to measure the powers in three arbitrary polarization states that have known relationships to each other, and, also measure the total power. The actual Stokes vector components is calculated from this information. Conveniently, a device having three polarization beam splitting surfaces and a prism provides a novel way in which to obtain the necessary information from an input beam so that a set of equations can be solved to determine the state of polarization the input beam.

Polarimeter

A method and apparatus of generating a test signal for broadcast to a plurality of locations for testing optical devices is disclosed. A tunable laser sweeps from a lower wavelength to a higher upper wavelength providing a test station with a variable input signal. A timing signal generated from the variable input signal is provided to the test station to determine the frequency of the variable input signal so that tests may be performed at several known wavelengths. Amplification is added to the system to provide sufficient power to the variable input signal and timing signal both split by a splitter to be provided to multiple test stations simultaneously.

Apparatus for testing an optical component

A voltage controlled attenuator for an optical telecommunication system comprises an optical attenuator placed between an input and an output lens for obstructing the path of an incoming light beam. The attenuator has variable attenuation (reflection, absorption, etc.) which is controlled for maintaining a preset power of the outgoing light beam. To this end, a fraction of the outgoing signal is diverted to an output detector by reflecting off an end face of a lens, and processed for obtaining a control signal representative of the output power. The control signal actuates a dc motor which displaces the attenuator to a position corresponding to a preset output power.

The invention relates to a method of measuring the wavelength of an optical signal such as a light beam. The optical signal is directed toward a detector where its intensity is detected and stored. Several optical elements each having a different wavelength dependence are moved into the path of the optical beam one at a time and for each intensity is detected and stored. The wavelength of the optical signal is then approximately determined based upon the ratio of the detected intensity of the optical signal in the absence of any optical elements and the detected intensities of the optical signal in the presence of each optical element.

An tunable optical filter of the kind used, for example, in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems and tunable source applications, has an interference filter element which is pivotable to adjust the operating wavelength of the filter. In order to reduce polarization dependency as the angle of the interference filter element changes, the light beam to be filtered is passed through the filter element twice, the second time with its polarization state shifted, specifically orthogonal, relative to the polarization state during the first pass. As a result, polarization dependent effects are equalized. The optical filter comprises a pivotally mounted filter element, an input optical fiber for directing a light beam to be filtered through the filter element in a first direction with a first polarization state, optical elements for rotating the polarization state of the filtered light beam and returning the light beam through the filter element (10) a second time, and an output optical fiber for receiving the light beam following passage of the light beam though the filter element the second time. The optical elements may comprise a reflector for reflecting a light beam emerging from the optical filter element to return through the optical filter element in the opposite direction, and a polarization rotator, such as a quarter-wave plate or a Faraday rotator, for rotating the polarization state of the light beam through 90 degrees before passage in the opposite direction.

Tunable optical filter

A polarization-independent optical detection apparatus for measuring light output from optical fibers comprises an optical detector having an input port for receiving input light by way of an optical path and an output for a corresponding detection signal. A polarization-transformation element is rotatably mounted in the optical path so that the input light passes through the element to reach the input port. A drive motor rotates the polarization-transformation element in a plane extending transversely of the optical path. The polarization-transforming element is selected to transform the polarization state of the input light reaching the detector, as the element spins, so that, for any given input polarization state, the time averaged electrical signal from the detector is approximately the average electrical signal from the detector over all input polarization states.
