Computing systems and methods for improving processing of collected data are disclosed. In one embodiment, while ray-tracing through a sub-surface region, a frequency-dependent outgoing ray direction is computed from a point on an interface disposed in the sub-surface region when the ray tracing is at the interface.

A source wavefield is computed from encoded source data calculated by performing encoding of source wavelets with noise. A receiver wavefield is computed from encoded receiver data calculated by encoding of measured receiver data with the noise. An output representing a target structure is determined based on the source wavefield and the receiver wavefield.

A function that represents data points is derived by creating a matrix (e.g., a Hankel matrix) of an initial rank, where the matrix contains the data points. Singular values are derived based on the matrix, and it is determined whether a particular one of the singular values satisfies an error criterion. In response to determining that the particular singular value does not satisfy the error criterion, the rank of the matrix is increased and the deriving and determining tasks are repeated. In response to determining that the particular singular value satisfies the error criterion, values of parameters that approximate the function are computed.

Deriving a function that represents data points

To update a model of a subterranean structure, a partial decomposition is computed of an operator that is used to compute a parameterization representing the update of the model. The partial decomposition of the operator is selected from among a partial eigendecomposition of a Fisher information operator, and a singular value decomposition of the operator. A term based on additional information is combined with the partial decomposition of the operator to derive an update of the model.

To perform imaging of a subterranean structure, an imaging operator is generated through the design of a weight, where the weight is computed according to a design criterion, where the design criterion is selected from the group consisting of: (1) the imaging operator provides a true amplitude image; (2) the imaging operator minimizes mean square error; and (3) the imaging operator corresponds to a least squares inverse of a forward modeling operator. The weighted filter as defined by the computed weights is applied to produce an image of a subterranean structure.
