A method and system for tracking client software use is disclosed. User data, specifically user interaction with a client-installed software application, is collected in data files and the data files are dynamically uploaded over a global computer system, such as the Internet, to a remote analysis system. The data files are parsed for on-going analysis of feature usage. Typically, for any action that a user performs in the software application, several items are recorded in a data file, such as a user ID, an absolute time-stamp, the method invoked including application source (if the software application includes more than one application), and details such as the dialog invoked, button pressed, menu used, menu item selected, application launch, application termination, as well as environment variables, such as operating system, screen resolution, etc.

Inserting images into documents. An image source device is made active with an application used to create text in a document. An application programming interface (API) module is accessed from within the application. The API interfaces the application with a TWAIN module used for acquiring an image with the image source device. The API module is separate from the TWAIN module and isolates users from directly interacting with the TWAIN module. The application uses the API module for negotiating with the image source device to determine a set of image capture parameters that control the image source device when acquiring the image. Data representing the image is communicated from the image source device into the memory of a computer hosting the application used to create text so that the data representing the image is a portion of a document stored in the memory.

A network analyzer is provided that searches all of the sites of a network, such as the Internet, contained in a site list and analyzes the analysis criteria. The site list may be specified by a user, randomly generated, or retrieved from a file. The analysis criteria may be default analysis criteria, retrieved from a file, or created by the user. After the site list and analysis criteria have been specified, a file, such as the HTML file, at each of the specified sites is downloaded and stored as a text file. The site is analyzed for number of occurrences and/or sizes of analysis criteria data. After all of the sites on the site list have been analyzed, the results are displayed. Results of an analysis may be compared to results of a previous analysis in order to track trends.
