Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for making substituted furan compounds using bioderived coupling partners and a heterogeneous catalyst. In particular disclosed embodiments, the method comprises coupling a furan compound with the coupling partner (e.g., an aliphatic or heteroaliphatic coupling partner) in the presence of the heterogeneous catalyst to provide the substituted furan compound.

Method for making substituted furan compound embodiments and derivatives thereof

A method for converting a diol in solution to an olefin fraction, the method comprising: (i) reacting a diol of the formula HO&#x2014;R&#x2014;OH in solution with a carbonyl-containing molecule of the formula: in the presence of an acid catalyst to result in a dioxolane molecule of the formula: wherein R is a hydrocarbon linker containing 1-12 carbon atoms, and Rand Rare independently selected from hydrogen atom and hydrocarbon groups containing 1-12 carbon atoms, wherein Rand Roptionally interconnect; (ii) removing the dioxolane molecule from the solution by phase separation; and (iii) contacting the dioxolane molecule with a metal-loaded zeolite at a temperature of 100-500&#xb0; C. to convert the dioxolane molecule to an olefin fraction.

The present disclosure relates to the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-based furanic ketones with a bifunctional copper-based catalyst in the presence of a solvent to prepare alkyl furans with high yield, purity, and scalability. Recyclable polymers from environmentally benign building blocks

The invention relates to a two-way approach to isolate, recover and upgrade 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) from fermentation broth. A complete separation and recovery process for 2,3-BDO using acetalization and trans-acetalization sequence. Acetalization with butyraldehyde using heterogeneous catalysts, either Amberlyst-15&#xae; or Nafion NR50&#xae;, efficiently isolates 2,3-BDO as phase-separated protected dioxolane. The approach provides significant process advantages with easy product recovery and high recyclability of the catalyst. Trans-acetalization of dioxolane with methanol (methanolysis) followed by distillation of acetal, yielded very high purity 2,3-BDO with about 90% isolated yield. Alternatively, dioxolane is used in a process direct to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as a BDO synthon allowing for recovery of the aldehyde.

In some embodiments, the system and method produces one or more fused cyclic compounds that can include one or more bridging points. System and method for making fuels

A process for the production of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohols and/or hydrocarbons includes condensing acetone and/or alcohol(s) to form one or more carbonyl compounds, and hydrogenating and/or hydrodeoxygenating at least one of the one or more carbonyl compounds to form the saturated or unsaturated alcohol(s) and/or hydrocarbons. In some embodiments, the condensation of acetone and/or alcohol(s) may be carried out in the presence of a solid acid catalyst and a transition metal catalyst. The saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohols and/or hydrocarbons may include one or more saturated linear C9 alcohols, C9 alkanes and/or one or more mono-unsaturated C9 alkenes.

Conversion of acetone and/or alcohol(s) to alcohol(s) and/or aliphatic hydrocarbons

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for making fuels and feedstocks from readily available alcohol starting materials. In some embodiments, the method concerns converting alcohols to carbonyl-containing compounds and then condensing such carbonyl-containing compounds together to form oligomerized species. These oligomerized species can then be reduced using by-products from the conversion of the alcohol. In some embodiments, the method further comprises converting saturated, oligomerized, carbonyl-containing compounds to aliphatic fuels.
