Method and apparatus for characterizing objects using a light-emitting array

An exemplary apparatus determines the dimensions of a package while being moved by a transport through a scanning zone. Sensors with different respective fields of view are disposed about a scanning zone and generate corresponding frames of 3-D images where some of the points represent the transport and package. A computing apparatus translates the points in the images into a transport coordinate system with a common point of origin on the transport so that the package does not appear to be in motion from frame to frame. The computing apparatus merges the translated points in different frames into a combined point cloud image and deletes points representing the transport resulting in a final point cloud image of the package. The computing apparatus determines the dimensions of the package based on the location of points representing the package in the final point cloud image.

Apparatus and method for determining the dimensions of a package while in motion

A system and method for identifying an object includes a plurality of object sensors, each object sensor configured and arranged to determine at least one parameter describing objects as they are relatively moved with respect to a sensing volume and having a known position and attitude with respect to the sensing volume. A location sensor is configured and arranged to produce position information relating to the relative movement. Outputs from the object and location sensors are passed to a processor and the parameters are associated with respective ones of the objects on the basis of the position information and on the basis of the known positions and attitudes of the sensors. For each object having associated parameters, the processor compares the parameters to known item parameters to assign item identification to the object.

System and method for product identification

A digital image capture and processing module for use with an Internet-based shipping, tracking and delivery network. The module includes a housing having a light transmission aperture with an optically transparent imaging window mounted thereover. A digital camera board supports an area-type color image sensing array, sensing array control electronics, and image capture and buffering electronics. An imaging lens assembly supported within said housing and having image forming optics with a field of view (FOV) on the area-type color image sensing array. A plurality of broad-band LEDs are supported within said housing for producing a field of broad-band illumination. A light focusing reflector is operably mounted for focusing the field of broad-band illumination. A digital image-processing subsystem supports image capture, processing and display functions, as well as digital image file transmission functions within the module. A system control subsystem controls and/or orchestrates the operation of components within the module; and a plurality of mode selection buttons are provided on the housing so that, upon depression, control signals are generated and are to the system control subsystem.

Digital color image capture and processing module

A mobile image capture and processing system including a digital image capture and processing instrument for capturing digital images of shipping documents associated with shipments to be delivered to an intended destination over a Web-based shipping, tracking, and delivery information network, and automatically processing such images to read a 1D or 2D bar-coded shipment tracking number graphically represented therein, and automatically encode the shipment tracking number within the header of the digital image file and the name or title of the digital image file. A Web-based portable data transaction terminal (PDT) or a Web-based portable digital assistant (PDA) is used to receive digital image files from the digital image capture and processing instrument via a first wireless data communication link, and transmitting such digital image files to (i) an application server supported on said network, and (ii) from said application server to a human-operated data-keying station supported on said network, where the shipping information contained in said digital image files can be read by human operators, and manually entered into a database (RDBMS).

Mobile image capture and processing system

An Internet-based shipping, tracking, and delivery network including a data collection and processing center operably connected to the infrastructure of the Internet, and including a RDBMS for storing and managing shipping information, and a plurality of pickup/delivery vehicles. Each pickup/delivery vehicle is equipped with a mobile digital image capture and processing (MICAP) system for (i) capturing and processing digital images of shipping documents, bearing embedded bar codes, at the point of pickup, (ii) automatically decoding embedded bar codes in said shipping documents, and performing optical character recognition (OCR) on text presented therein, (iii) formatting captured digital images of the shipping labels with such decoded/recognized information, and (iv) transmitting the formatted digital images to said data collection and processing center, for automatic recognition processing and population of the RDBMS maintained by said network.

A method of translating a shipping document regarding one or more shipment items being shipped, tracked and delivered to a final destination using a Web-based shipping, tracking, and delivery information network. At the point of shipment pickup, the method involves digitally imaging an original shipping document (or shipping label) in connection with a shipment, at one or more image resolutions. The bar-coded shipment tracking number graphically represented in the original shipping document is automatically read, and its character data string is automatically encoded into the header of the corresponding digital image file and/or the name of the digital image file. While the shipment is being delivered to the first scanning point in the network, the digital image file is transmitted over a wireless communication link to one or more digital image processing application servers supported on the network. The digital images are processed so that shipping information contained in the digital images (and indexed with the original shipment tracking number) is automatically abstracted/recognized, and loaded into the shipping information RDBMS maintained on the network. When the delivered shipment arrives at the first scanning point in the network, the bar-coded shipment tracking number (contained in the original shipping document) is read, and corresponding shipping information maintained in an RDBMS is accessed. A unique network-assigned shipping label is automatically generated, and the unique network-assigned shipping label is applied to the shipment items at the first scanning point in the network, for use in managing future services supported on the network.

An Internet-based shipping, tracking and delivery network is deployed, wherein at the point of shipment pickup, digital images of shipping documents are captured and processed, shipping information graphically represented the digital images is extracted and encoded into digital image files, and these digital image files are transmitted to an application server and for storage in an information DBMS and subsequent recognition and processing, while the shipment is in transit, from the point of shipment pickup to the first scanning point. A method of and apparatus for an Internet-based network configured for facilitating rapid re-labeling of a shipment of packages at the first scanning point in the Internet-based network. The network employs the capture of shipping document images and recognition-processing thereof initiated from the point of shipment pickup and completed while the shipment is being transported to the first scanning point. Shipping information extracted from the original shipping document is extracted from the shipping document images and stored in a DBMS. At the first scanning point, the shipping tracking number encoded within the original shipping document or original shipping label on the package in the shipment is used to access shipping information stored in the DBMS, and this shipping information is used to generate a new shipping label for each package in the shipment. The new shipping label can include a unique network-assigned machine-readable (NAMR) shipping label including either a 1D bar code label or an RFID tag encoded with a unique network-assigned shipment tracking number, which at each subsequent sorting and routing hub is read to access the unique network-assigned shipment tracking number, for accessing shipping information from the DBMS to deliver the package to its intended point of destination. Alternatively, the new shipping label can include a unique network-assigned machine-readable (NAMR) shipping label including either an intelligent 2D bar code label or an intelligent RFID tag encoded with a unique network-assigned shipment tracking number and shipping information extracted from the original shipping document, which at each subsequent sorting and routing hub is read to access shipment information to facilitate routing and delivery of the package to its intended point of destination.

A Web-enabled mobile image capturing and processing (MICAP) cell-phone for use on a Web-based shipping, tracking and delivery network. The cell-phone include a hand-supportable housing, and a digital image capture and processing engine for capturing and processing digital images of shipping documents at a point of shipment pickup. An image-based bar code reading engine is integrated with the housing for recognizing 1D and/or 2D bar-coded labels in captured digital images. A display panel displays digital images. An RF transceiver circuit, with an RF antenna, supports wireless data communication protocols. A microprocessor and memory aboard the cellphone provides a computing platform supporting an operating system (OS) and one or more application programs, including a Web browser program, and a client application program. At least the application program supports the automatically reading of bar-coded shipment tracking numbers graphically represented in the captured digital images, and automatically generates digital image files (i) having headers that are encoded with machine-recognized shipment tracking numbers, and (ii) which are named or titled using the machine-recognized shipment tracking numbers.

Web-enabled mobile image capturing and processing (MICAP) cell-phone

A technique for pre-compensating a digital bit stream for distortion imposed by a transmission path includes adjusting the level of the digital bit stream on a bit-by-bit basis in a manner that simulates the effects of a filter having a transfer function that is substantially the inverse of that of the transmission path. The technique includes generating a plurality of reference levels that correspond to correcting levels of the digital bit stream and switching these levels to the transmission path at high speed in response to the current bit of the digital bit stream and at least one previous bit. When used in an automatic test system, the technique improves signal transmission and reduces jitter, therefore allowing jitter of devices under test to be measured more accurately.
