An electronic device described herein includes a touch screen for a touch sensitive display carried by a portable housing. The electronic device is configured to operate in a high detection threshold mode to determine whether an object is in contact with the touch sensitive display, and operate in a low detection threshold mode to determine whether the object is adjacent to the touch sensitive display, based on lack of detection of the object being in contact with the touch sensitive display. The electronic device is further configured to determine whether the object is in contact with a peripheral edge of the portable housing by determining whether the object is adjacent opposite sides of the touch sensitive display, based on detection of the object being adjacent to the touch sensitive display.

Touch screen controller for determining relationship between a user's hand and a housing of an electronic device

A touch-screen-controller (TSC) performs mutual sensing to acquire touch strength values from a touch matrix formed by capacitively intersecting conductive lines. For each line, the TSC generates an emulated self capacitance value from an associated touch strength value based upon a position of that line compared to a location on the touch matrix adjacent to which a first touch type is expected to occur, and determines presence of the first touch type adjacent to the touch matrix based upon the emulated values. The emulated values for each conductive line may be weighted based upon its closeness to the location where the first touch type is expected to occur. The weighting may be zero if its associated conductive line is outside of the location where the first touch type is expected to occur, and may be one if inside of the location where the first touch type is expected to occur.

Techniques for using a touch screen to perform ear detection using emulated self capacitance sensing

A determination is made as to whether touch pressure data acquired from each of a plurality of touch pressure sensors is indicative of abnormal operation. If abnormal operation is indicated, the touch pressure data from each of the plurality of touch pressure sensors, except those touch pressure sensors having touch pressure data indicative of abnormal operation, is summed. Then, the sum is multiplied by a correction factor to produce a touch pressure output indicative of physical force applied to the plurality of touch pressure sensors.

Methods and techniques for correcting pressure sensor data in the presence of abnormal pressure sensor readings

A touch screen controller (TSC) performs mutual capacitance sensing to acquire touch strength values from a touch matrix formed by capacitively intersecting drive and sense lines. For each sense line, the TSC sums the touch strength values associated therewith to form an emulated value for that sense line, and applies a weighting thereto, the weighting based upon a position of that sense line compared to a location on the touch matrix adjacent which a user's ear is expected to be placed. For each drive line, the TSC sums the touch strength values associated therewith to form an emulated value for that drive line, and applies a weighting thereto, the weighting based upon a position of that drive line compared to the location on the touch matrix adjacent which the user's ear is expected to be placed. The TSC determines presence of the user's based upon the emulated values.

A device includes a touch and pressure sensitive screen having touch pressure sensors and a controller. The controller acquires touch pressure data from the plurality of touch pressure sensors. For each touch pressure sensor, the controller determines whether the touch pressure data from that touch pressure sensor is indicative of abnormal operation of that touch pressure sensor. Where no abnormal operation is indicated, the controller sums the touch pressure data from each of the touch pressure sensors to produce a touch pressure output. Where abnormal operation is indicated, the controller sums the touch pressure data from each of the touch pressure sensors and multiply the sum by a correction factor to produce the touch pressure output.

A method includes upon sensing a touch to a first location on a touch display, reporting first coordinates of the touch. After sensing movement of the touch along a first path from the first location to a second location more than a tolerance distance away, intermediate coordinates of the touch along the first path that are not more than a cutoff distance away are reported such that there is a first gap between a last reported intermediate coordinate and the second location. After sensing movement of the touch along a second path from the second location to a third location more, second coordinates of the touch are reported, the second reported coordinates of the touch being a point along the first path that is calculated by subtracting the first gap from a distance between the first location and the third location, and then adding a first compensation difference thereto.
