The present invention relates to a lubricating composition containing (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (b) a compound selected from the group consisting of: (i) an ester-containing heterocycle; (ii) an amide-containing heterocycle; and (iii) a pyrimidine, wherein the ester-containing heterocycle and the amide-containing heterocycle have a hydrocarbyl group containing 6 to 40 carbon atoms. The invention further provides for a method of supplying an internal combustion engine with the lubricating composition.

Composition containing heterocyclic compounds and a method of lubricating an internal combustion engine

In accordance with the present invention, it has been discovered that an additive which is substantially insoluble in, has low solubility in and/or is otherwise incompatible with a functional fluid, may be supplied to the functional fluid by use of a gel composition and/or a solid additive composition containing the additive, such that the functional fluid can receive the benefit of the supplied additive and/or contain levels of the additive not otherwise achievable by conventional delivery method due to the incompatibility of the additive with the functional fluid.

Delivery of substantially insoluble additives to functional fluids

The present Invention relates to the use of a compound in a lubricating composition as an engine oil antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent, wherein the compound is a heterocycle having a hydrocarbyl group containing 6 to 40 carbon atoms, wherein the heterocycle is either (i) a heterocycle compound having a functional group selected from the group consisting of at least one of an ester, an amide, a salt and an acid, or (ii) a pyrimidine.

A metal overbased composition is disclosed that comprises (A) at least one natural oil comprising an animal oil or vegetable oil comprising a triglyceride of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups containing from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms and (B) a metal base oxide (MO), hydroxide (MOH) or alkoxide (R.sup.4 OM) wherein the metal comprises an alkali or alkaline earth and R.sup.4 is a hydrocarbyl group containing from about 1 to about 24 carbon atoms, and wherein the equivalent ratio of (A):(B) is from 0.90-10:1 to form a sponified intermediate, adding 2-11 equivalents of (B) per equivalent of formed saponified intermediate and reacting excess (B) with (C) an acidic gas comprising carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxide. This composition may also be gelled to produce a rheology control agent.

Lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described which comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and minor amounts of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) from about 0.70 equivalent up to less than one equivalent, per equivalent of acylating agent, of at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) at least one metal salt of a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid wherein (C-1) the dithiophosphoric acid is prepared by reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with an alcohol mixture comprising at least 10 mole percent of iopropyl alcohol and at least one primary aliphatic alcohol containing from about 3 to about 13 carbon atoms, and (C-2) the metal is a Group II metal, aluminum, tin, iron, cobalt, lead, molybdenum, manganese, nickel or copper.

A lubricating oil formulation is described which is useful in internal combustion engines. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprises (A) at least about 60% by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity, (B) at least about 2.0% by weight of at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) from about 0.70 equivalent up to less than one equivalent, per equivalent of acylating agent, of at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group, and wherein said substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a polyalkene, said polyalkene being characterized by an Mn value of abotu 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4.5, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) from about 0.01 to about 2% by weight of at least one basic alkali metal salt of sulfonic or carboxylic acid. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain (D) at least one metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate and/or (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative composition, and/or (F) at least one partial fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, and/or (G) at least one neutral or basic alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in this specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the new API Service Classification identified as SG.

Lubricating oil compositions

A lubricating oil formulation is described which is useful in internal combustion engines. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and at least 2.0% by weight of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group, and wherein said substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a polyalkylene, said polyalkene being characterized by Mn value of about 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4.5, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) from about 0.05 to about 5% by weight of a mixture of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids wherein in at least one of the dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids, one of the hydrocarbyl groups (C-1) is an isopropyl or secondary butyl group, the other hydrocarbyl group (C-2) contains at least five carbon atoms, and at least about 20 mole percent of all of the hydrocarbyl groups present in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups or mixtures thereof, provided that at least about 25 mole percent of the hydrocarbyl groups in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups, or mixtures thereof when the lubrication oil compositions comprise less than about 2.5% by weight of (B). In one embodiment, the oil compositions contain at least about 0.05 weight percent of isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups of mixtures thereof derived from the mixture of metal salts of phosphorodithioic acids (C). The oil compositions also may contain other desirable additives such as (D) at least one neutral or basic alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound and/or (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as 'SG', and in another embodiment the oil compositions of the invention will contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oils to satisfy the requirements of the API Service Classification identified as 'CE'.

A method of preparing boron-containing compositions is described which comprises reacting at least one hydroxy-substituted ester, amide or imide with a boron compound. Such boron-containing compositions are useful in lubricating oils and provide the lubricating oils with anti-wear and/or friction-reducing properties. The boron-containing compositions also are useful in fuel compositions.

Boron-containing compositions, and lubricants and fuels containing same

A composition comprising: (A) a metal salt of (A)(I) at least one acid of the formula ##STR1## wherein each X and X.sup.1 is independently oxygen or sulfur, each n is zero or one, and each R.sup.1 is independently the same or different hydrocarbon based group, and (A)(II) at least one carboxylic acid of about 2 to about 40 carbon atoms, the ratio of equivalents of (A)(I) to equivalents of (A)(II) being in the range of about 0.5:1 to about 1:0; and (B) an olefinically unsaturated compound capable of reacting with active sulfur. Compositions comprising the foregoing composition reacted with active sulfur are also disclosed. Lubricants and functional fluids comprising the foregoing compositions are disclosed. A process comprising reacting active sulfur with an olefinically unsaturated compound in the presence of component (A) is also disclosed.
