In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method an article, may operate to move a borehole seal in space with respect to the wall of a borehole while monitoring borehole seal contact quality data, which may comprise borehole seal contact pressure data and acoustic data. Operations may further include adjusting the movement of the borehole seal based on the borehole seal contact quality data. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Methods of isolating annular areas formed by multiple casing strings in a well

Methods and apparatus are provided for reducing and/or substantially eliminating sensitivity mismatch of acoustic receivers used with acoustic sources to determine acoustic properties of geologic formations as a logging tool traverses the formations. Methods are directed to detecting waveform arrival times at receivers, determining places in a well where arrival times of waves are substantially the same at a plurality of receivers, and estimating effective receiver sensitivities and equalization factors using Stoneley wave amplitudes and windowed deconvolution of Stoneley waves. Methods are further directed to correcting wave amplitudes using estimated effective receiver sensitivities and equalization factors for receivers.

Adaptive equalization of downhole acoustic receivers

A method for determining the downhole flow regime in a horizontal well borehole traversing a subterranean formation. A first gas holdup value within the borehole is measured using a fluid density tool. A second gas holdup value within the borehole is measured using a fullbore gas-holdup tool. The downhole flow regime is then determined as a function of the first gas holdup value and the second gas holdup value. A downhole flow regime comprised of dispersed bubble flow is indicated where the first gas holdup value is approximately equal to the second gas holdup value. A downhole flow regime comprised of annular flow is indicated where the first gas holdup value is substantially greater than the second gas holdup value and the velocity of the gas phase is substantially greater than the liquid phase. A downhole flow regime comprised of stratified flow is indicated where the first gas holdup value is less than or greater than the second gas holdup value.

An improved method and apparatus are provided for orienting a particular well completion in accordance with azimuths determined with respect to magnetic north. The invention permits the perforating gun of a wireline tool to be properly oriented in either a vertical or non-vertical wellbore. A wireline tool is described whose lower section contains a gun section and is rotatably joined to the upper section and may be rotated about a swivel joint assembly to move independently of the upper section and in accordance with an orienting means. The rotation may be accomplished by mechanical, hydraulic or electrical means of imparting rotation. In addition, preferred embodiments of the invention include a distant display such that operators may verify directional orientation of charges prior to initiating them. Alternative embodiments are provided for practicing the invention using multiple passes into the well which involve less risk of damage to portions of the well tool.
