The cutting structure on the lower mill is arrayed in rows that are preferably parallel. The cutting structure in each row is made sharper and more durable than prior designs with the objective of cutting the window higher than where the window mill started the window. The use of the rows increases the contact stress of the inserts on the casing inside wall because at any given time fewer and sharper inserts are cutting the casing wall to lengthen the window. As a row wears down the next row takes over to continue the cutting where the previous row was active and to further penetrate the casing wall. The cutout angle can also increase as this occurs. As a result a decreased insert density results in more effective casing wall cutting to extend the window to allow larger tools to exit into the window off the whipstock.

Lower mill spaced cutting ring structure

A system, method and apparatus for cleaning a wellbore is disclosed. A workstring is conveyed in a wellbore. A jet sub provided associated with the wellbore, wherein the jet sub includes at least one nozzle, the nozzle including: an inlet; an outlet; at least four successive concentric stages in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet, wherein each of the at least four stages has a discrete length, and the stages have progressive smaller discrete diameters, and an interface formed between each stage. A completion fluid is provided to the at least one nozzles via the work string and jet sub. The completion fluid is expelled via the at least one nozzles.

High efficiency nozzle

A mill for use in milling a section in a wellbore is disclosed that includes a first concave curved section followed by a substantially flat section and a second concave curved section following the substantially flat section and a number of blades attached to the first concave curved section, substantially flat section and the second concave curved section, wherein each such blade includes a first convex curved portion that corresponds to the first concave curved section and a second convex curved portion that corresponds to the second concave curved section.

Casing exit mills and apparatus and methods of use

A cutting element includes, a body having two planes, each of the two planes defining a plurality of edges, and a support extending from a first of the two planes. The support and the body are configured such that when the cutting element is resting against a planar surface such that at least one of the plurality of edges and the support are in contact with the planar surface, the second of the two planes forms an acute angle with the planar surface. Additionally, a protrusion extends laterally from at least one face of the body and an indentation is formed in at least one face of the body. The protrusion and the indentation are complementary to one another such that the protrusion of a first of the cutting elements is positionable within the indentation of a second of the cutting elements.

Cutting element, tool and method of cutting within a borehole

A cutting element includes a body having two planes, each of the two planes defining a plurality of edges, and a support extending from a first of the two planes. The support and the body are configured such that when at least one of the plurality of edges and the support are in contact with the planar surface, edges of the plurality of edges on a second of the two planes form cutting edges and the second of the two planes forms an acute angle with the planar surface. The second of the two planes of the cutting element has a recess formed therein sized and positioned to be receptive to a support of a second cutting element similar to the cutting element when the first of the two planes of the second cutting element is butted against the second of the two planes of the cutting element.

A cutting device includes, at least one stack of cutting elements attached to a cutter surface having, a first element and a second element attached to the cutter surface. A third element is attached to the first element and the second element. The three elements are sized and shaped such that prior to attachment to the cutter surface the three elements are restable in a stable manner on the cutter surface due to gravity alone. A plane-defined-surface defined by one of the two planes of a modified gilmoid of the third element positioned further from the cutter surface is oriented at an angle of about 35 to 55 degrees relative to the cutter surface.

Cutting device and method of making

A debris removal device for subterranean use features a debris laden inlet tube within a housing to define a debris collection space at the lower end of the housing. An eductor draws the debris laden fluid to the top of the inlet tube where the flow stream is returned to a downhole direction with discrete passages formed between the housing and the inlet tube by spaced parallel plates. The plates feature extending tabs on diametrically opposed lower ends of the plates. As a result flow heading back downhole can release debris and turn back uphole in passages defined between the outside of the plates and the inside wall of the housing. The tabs allow the flow turning uphole to make a greater radius turn because of a crossing over effect created by the tabs. There is less turbulence and narrower width to the flowing stream going uphole.

Subterranean solids separator

A downhole tool for removing debris from a wellbore comprises a mandrel and a shroud disposed around a portion of the mandrel. The mandrel includes at least one mandrel port in fluid communication with a mandrel bore. The shroud includes a cavity and a shroud port. Debris laden fluid is pulled into the shroud cavity by flowing fluid through the mandrel bore, out the mandrel port, into the shroud cavity, and through the shroud port. The debris-laden fluid is pulled into the shroud cavity due to a pressure differential created by the flow of the fluid through the mandrel port and out of the shroud port. As the debris laden fluid flows into the shroud cavity, the debris is captured within the tool.

Downhole debris removal tool and methods of using same

A method of orienting a cutting element includes, configuring the cutting element so that gravitational forces acting thereon against a support surface bias the cutting element toward a specific orientation relative to the support surface. The specific orientation is such that at least one support and at least one edge of a gilmoid formed by intersections of surfaces of the gilmoid contact the support surface.

Method of orienting a cutting element

Downhole cutting tools such as blade mills comprise a body having an upper end for connection with a rotating component of a drill string and a guide member disposed at lower end. The guide member can comprise a shape that is reciprocal to an engagement member disposed on an object within the well that is to be cut by the cutting mill. In certain embodiments, the guide member comprises a portion that is spherically shaped or an apex formed by two angled cutting elements. The cutting tools can also include one or more blades having cutting elements disposed thereon in a stepped arrangement. In one such embodiment, the cutting elements are disposed to cover one or more steps profiled on a lower end of the blade to lessen wear of the blade caused by the cutting of the object by the blade.

Face stabilized downhole cutting tool

A cutting element includes a modified gilmoid having two planes defining a plurality of cutting edges thereon, and a first support extending from a central area of a first of the two planes and a second support extending from a central area of a second of the two planes. The supports are sized and positioned such that when the cutting element is resting against a planar surface such that one of the plurality of cutting edges and the first support are in contact with the planar surface the first plane forms an acute angle with the planar surface.

Cutting element, cutter tool and method of cutting within a borehole

Cutting elements for downhole cutting tools comprise a top surface having a cutting surface portion and a cutting profile disposed across the top surface. The cutting elements comprise first and second longitudinal side surfaces and first and second lateral side surfaces, each having a respective cross-section. The cutting profile can be disposed on the cutting surface either asymmetrically or symmetrically. Asymmetrical disposition permits two cutting elements to be arranged facing each other to cover a center point of a cutting tool. The cutting edge of asymmetrical or symmetrically disposed cutting profiles can have a shape that facilitates self-sharpening during cutting.

Cutting elements for cutting tools

A cutting element includes, a gilmoid with a plurality of cutting edges thereon, and at least one support extending from the gilmoid. The at least one support and at least one of the plurality of cutting edges are simultaneously contactable with a surface upon which the cutting element is restable.

Cutting element and method of orienting

A milling tool which includes a nose cutting portion, a cutting section having a plurality of hardened cutters and a shaft portion. A wear pad is disposed on the cutting section and shaft portion. Upon the shaft portion, the wear pad extends radially outwardly to an engagement diameter that exceeds the maximum cutting diameter of the cutters.
