In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a transmitter configured to modulate symbols onto at least one of a plurality of the spectrally overlapping carrier signals; a processor coupled to the transmitter, wherein the processor outputs data for transmission by the transmitter, wherein the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform to the data transmitted by the transmitter; the processor modulating a first carrier of the plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals based on a first modulation scheme while modulating a second carrier of the plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals based on a second modulation scheme.

In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a receiver configured to receive a waveform comprising spectrally overlapping carrier signals from at least two of a plurality of remotes, wherein the spectrally overlapping carrier signals are modulated using an inverse Fourier transform algorithm; a transmitter; a processor coupled to the transmitter, wherein the processor outputs data for transmission by the transmitter, wherein the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform algorithm to the data provided to the transmitter; a controller programmed to calculate an elapsed time for each of the two remotes, the elapsed time representing a time between transmitting a ranging signal to a remote and receiving a signal from the remote in response to the ranging signal; the controller further programmed to reducing any difference between at least two elapsed times by instructing at least one of the plurality of remotes to adjust a delay.

In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a receiver configured to de-modulate symbols from at least one of a plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals to produce a receiver output; a transmitter configured to modulate symbols onto at least one of a plurality of the spectrally overlapping carrier signals; a processor coupled to the transmitter, wherein the processor outputs data for transmission by the transmitter, wherein the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform to the data transmitted by the transmitter; the processor coupled to the receiver, wherein the processor applies a Fourier transform to the receiver output; and a controller programmed to instruct the transmitter to transmit at least one symbol representing a request for bandwidth allocation on a first carrier; wherein the controller is further programmed to determine when a collision has occurred on the first carrier.

In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a receiver configured to receive a waveform comprising a plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals from at least two of a plurality of remotes, the carrier signals are modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; a transmitter; a processor coupled to the transmitter, the processor outputs data for transmission to the transmitter, the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform to the data provided to the transmitter; a controller programmed to instruct the transmitter to transmit timing adjustments to the at least two of the plurality of remotes, the timing adjustments instruct the at least two of the plurality of remotes to adjust transmission timing so that transmitted symbols associated with frames of a predetermined multiframe structure are received in sequence from the at least two of the plurality of remotes based on the structure.

A apparatus for providing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an inverse FFT is provided. The apparatus comprises a radix-N core. The radix-N core includes at least N multipliers. The radix-N core also includes a twiddle-factor lookup table that stores complex twiddle-factors. The twiddle-factor lookup table is coupled to one input of each of the multipliers. The radix-N core also includes a conversion random access memory (RAM) that stores transform points. The conversion RAM is coupled to another input of each of the multipliers. The radix-N core also includes an array of at least N-times-N adder-subtracter-accumulators.

Fast fourier transform apparatus and method

A video and telephony signal distribution network is provided. The network includes a head end for transmitting to a plurality of remote units. The network further includes at least one optical/electrical converter unit that transmits to the remote units over at least two coaxial cables coupled to a common optical/electrical converter unit. Each remote unit transmits upstream electrical data signals over its associated coaxial cable to the optical/electrical converter unit using a common bandwidth. The optical/electrical converter unit converts and frequency shifts the upstream electrical data signals from at least one remote unit to form an optical upstream data signal for transmittal to the head end such that the frequency spectrum used for the upstream communications is simultaneously used on each of the coaxial cables of to optical/electrical converter unit.

Hybrid fiber/coax video and telephony communication

A method for monitoring at least one telephony communication n-bit channel, wherein one of the bits is a parity bit, includes sampling the parity bit of the n-bit channel. A probable bit error rate is derived from the sampling of the parity bit. The probable bit error rate can be compared to a pre-determined bit error rate value to determine if the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is corrupted. If the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is corrupted, the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is re-allocated to an uncorrupted and unallocated telephony communication n-bit channel. Further, at least one unallocated telephony communication channel can be periodically monitored and error data accumulated to indicate the quality thereof.

Channel selection for a hybrid fiber coax network

The communication system includes a hybrid fiber/coax distribution network. A head end provides for downstream transmission of telephony and control data in a first frequency bandwidth over the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network and reception of upstream telephony and control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network. The head end includes a head end multicarrier modem for modulating at least downstream telephony information on a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the first frequency bandwidth and demodulating at least upstream telephony information modulated on a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the second frequency bandwidth. The head end further includes a controller operatively connected to the head end multicarrier modem for controlling transmission of the downstream telephony information and downstream control data and for controlling receipt of the upstream control data and upstream telephony information. The system further includes service units, each service unit operatively connected to the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network for upstream transmission of telephony and control data in the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of the downstream control data and telephony in the first frequency bandwidth. Each service unit includes a service unit multicarrier modem for modulating at least the upstream telephony information on at least one carrier orthogonal at the head end terminal to another carrier in the second frequency bandwidth and for demodulating at least downstream telephony information modulated on at least a band of a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the first frequency bandwidth. Each service unit also includes a controller operatively connected to the service unit multicarrier modem for controlling the modulation of and demodulation performed by the service unit multicarrier modem. A method of monitoring communication channels, a distributed loop method for adjusting transmission characteristics to allow for transmission of data in a multi-point to point communication system, a polyphase filter technique for providing ingress protection and a scanning method for identifying frequency bands to be used for transmission by service units are also included. Also provided is a method and apparatus for performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In one embodiment, a scalable FFT system is built using a novel dual-radix butterfly core.

Communication system with multicarrier telephony transport

An optical switch is disclosed including a first and second array of optical fibers held in axial alignment and relatively rotatable about an axis of rotation to effect optical coupling and decoupling of fibers of the opposing arrays. Terminal ends of fibers of the first array are set at a predetermined non-orthogonal angle relative to the axis of rotation. Terminal ends of fibers of the second array are set at an angle which is complementary to the non-orthogonal angle.

Optical switch with reduced reflection

The present invention organizes optical fibers from a trunk cable for connection to fibers from various distribution cables. The apparatus includes a housing having a plurality of trays swingable from a storage position inside the housing to an access position in front of the housing. Each tray includes a spool for holding excess fiber from the trunk cable and a spool for holding fiber from a pigtail cable. In addition, various routing paths are provided to include a path for holding excess fiber from a distribution cable of a pigtail cable leading to a distribution cable. Connections between the fiber of the trunk cable and the pigtain cable and between the pigtail cable and the jumper leading to the distribution cable are attached to the tray and readily movable between the storage and access position. The apparatus may also be used simply to store fiber.
