The invention is a single-bath electrolytic de-oxidation and anodization process in which a workpiece surface such as an aluminum surface is electrolytically de-oxidized and then anodized to form an adhesive oxide layer in the same electrolytic chemical bath without removing the workpiece from the bath. Upon completion of the anodization step, the piece is rinsed in a water bath. The invention further includes recirculating the electrolytic bath through a filter to suppress contaminant levels in the bath to prevent metal ion or organic contaminants from the de-oxidation step from compromising the integrity of the anodization step.

Single tank de-oxidation and anodization process

A blasting machine utilizing sublimable particles comprising forming means (14) for producing particles having a substantially uniform length thereto, dispensing means (32) for receiving the particles and for introducing the particles into a low pressure transport gas flow, and a nozzle (44) for accelerating the particles and having a high pressure, low velocity gas flow coupled to it, the nozzle (44) being adapted to convert the high pressure, low velocity gas flow into a low pressure, high velocity gas flow. A conduit (142) coupled to the nozzle (44) and the dispensing means (32) receives the particles and introduces the particles into the low pressure, high velocity gas flow within the nozzle (44) which entrains the particles and accelerates them to a high exit velocity.

Blasting machine utilizing sublimable particles

Effective utilization of pellets of material capable of subliming under conditions of use in a sandblasting process in which such pellets are propelled against a surface by a stream of pressurized gas requires careful control of a number of interrelated factors. When the process is employed for the purpose of removing material from a surface the pellets used should preferably have sharp edges and corners. Further, they should be employed so that they will hit against such a surface as rapidly as reasonably possible. Preferably these pellets are both agitated and subjected to alpha radiation as they are held prior to being entrained into a stream of moving gas and as they are introduced into such a stream. Further, preferably the particles are discharged against the surface being treated through a so-called 'sonic nozzle' so as to maximize their momentum as they are directed toward the surface being treated. It is considered that all of these expedients should be used together in obtaining preferred results with the invention.

Sandblasting with pellets of material capable of sublimation

A novel improved urethane, urethane coating formed of epxoy resin and polyisocyanate for metallic or non-metallic substrates and the like exhibits improved resistance to blistering under high moisture conditions. The coating includes an epoxy resin having functional hydroxyl groups, for example, the reaction product of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A. A hardener is included which comprises one or more selected polyisocyanates, preferably a mixture of a selected aliphatic biuret type polyisocyanate and an aromatic diisocyanate. A coupling agent, preferably an epoxy-containing silane, is included. A catalyst such as zinc octoate, pigments such as leachable chromates and organic solvent for the components may also be included. The pigments are held in suspension through the use of a suspending agent. The ratio of --OH groups of the epoxy resin to --NCO groups in the hardener is about 1:1.4-3.6.
