An ultrathin optical panel, and a method of producing an ultrathin optical panel, are disclosed, including stacking a plurality of glass sheets, which sheets may be coated with a transparent cladding substance or may be uncoated, fastening together the plurality of stacked coated glass sheets using an epoxy or ultraviolet adhesive, applying uniform pressure to the stack, curing the stack, sawing the stack to form an inlet face on a side of the stack and an outlet face on an opposed side of the stack, bonding a coupler to the inlet face of the stack, and fastening the stack, having the coupler bonded thereto, within a rectangular housing having an open front which is aligned with the outlet face, the rectangular housing having therein a light generator which is optically aligned with the coupler. The light generator is preferably placed parallel to and proximate with the inlet face, thereby allowing for a reduction in the depth of the housing.

Ultrathin optical panel and a method of making an ultrathin optical panel

A method of creating uniform adhesive layers in a planar optical display is disclosed. The method includes providing an adhesive reservoir, providing at least two optical panels, placing spacers between the optical panels, thereby forming a stack of optical panels having at least one uniform gap between adjacent ones of the optical panels, placing the stack into a panel reservoir having a height and a width, which panel reservoir is connected to the adhesive reservoir by a fluid path, and injecting adhesive from the adhesive reservoir through the fluid path into the bottom of the panel reservoir until each uniform gap is filled. A method of producing a black cladding layer having small particulate size for use in a planar optical display is also disclosed. The method includes providing black pigment having a fine particulate size of approximately 0.05 microns, placing the particulates in solution, filtering the epoxy having the fine black particles in solution, stacking a plurality of optical panels in a fixture in the presence of the filtered epoxy, and curing the stack.

A spatially modulated light beam is projected, reflected, and redirected through a prismatic optical panel to form a video image for direct viewing thereon.

Prismatic optical display

An ultrathin mesh optical panel and a method of use and making are disclosed. One embodiment of the optical panel includes a plurality of optical waveguides, wherein each optical waveguide is formed of a mesh material surrounding an optically clear core. The optical panel further includes a light generator. Each optical waveguide internally reflects the light incoming at the inlet of the waveguide to the outlet of the waveguide. The optical panel may optionally include a light redirecting coupling layer and/or a diffuser. An alternate embodiment of the ultrathin optical panel includes a plurality of optical waveguides, wherein the mesh material serves as the light transmissive material. A method of making and using is applicable to both major embodiments. A modification of either embodiment is disclosed wherein the optical waveguide is aligned to be non-perpendicular to the panel face.

A multi-clad black display panel, and a method of making a multi-clad black display panel, are disclosed, wherein a plurality of waveguides, each of which includes a light-transmissive core placed between an opposing pair of transparent cladding layers and a black layer disposed between transparent cladding layers, are stacked together and sawed at an angle to produce a wedge-shaped optical panel having an inlet face and an outlet face.
