Amphiphilic prodrugs of general formula A-X are disclosed, wherein A is a biologically active agent or may be metabolised to a biologically active agent; and X is selected from the group consisting of R, or up to three R moieties attached to a linker, Y, Yor Y, wherein R is selected from a group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, branched alkyl, branched alkenyl, branched alkynyl, substituted alkyl, substituted alkenyl and substituted alkynyl groups and their analogues; Yis a linker group which covalently attached to an R group at one site and is attached to A at a further independent site; Yis a linker group which is covalently attached to two R groups at two independent sites and is attached to A at a further independent site; and Yis a linker group which is covalently attached to three R groups at three independent sites and is attached to A at a further independent site. Self-assembly of the amphiphilic prodrugs into reverse lyotropic phases, particularly hexagonal, cubic and sponge, is disclosed. In preferred embodiments A is dopamine or a 5-fluorouracil prodrug.

Amphiphile prodrugs

The invention relates to energy storage devices such as capacitors and supercapacitors and non-aqueous solvent systems suitable for use as an electrolyte solvent therein. Devices incorporating the solvent system are suitable for use in, for example, wireless devices or automotive applications at high temperatures with minimal, if any mass loss. The solvent system has at least one low boiling component (preferably a nitrile, eg acetonitrile) at least one high boiling component compatible with said low boiling component (preferably lactones, eg &#x3b3;-butyrolactone and/or organic carbonates eg ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate); and wherein the components are selected in an amount such that said non-aqueous solvent system does not boil at the boiling point of the low viscosity solvent alone but has a boiling point greater than said low viscosity solvent alone.

Electrolyte for an energy storage device

An electrode for an energy storage device, including a substrate of at least one metal that forms a native oxide layer; and a treated layer formed on the substrate from the native oxide layer, the treated layer having a resistance that is less than the resistance of a native oxide layer. In some embodiments, the treated layer possesses at least one of the following properties: includes one or more dopants, is thinner than the native oxide layer, has a carbon coating that is applied to the treated layer which improved adhesion characteristics, and others. Further, there is an energy storage device having two or more of such electrodes, wherein the device has a low initial ESR and/or a low ESR at various intervals. Moreover, disclosed is a low resistance metal including a substrate of at least one metal that forms a native oxide layer; and a treated layer formed on the substrate from the native oxide layer, the treated layer having a resistance that is less than the resistance of a native oxide layer. Additionally, methods relating to the above devices are also disclosed.

Electrode for an energy storage device

A method is disclosed that affords improved stability to wellbores during drilling in argillaceous formations with water-based drilling fluids. The method comprises adding to the drilling fluid a compound of the invention having the capacity in water to generate a highly efficient membrane on argillaceous materials. The compound is soluble in the drilling fluid at least at the pH at which the compound is added to the drilling fluid or exists in the drilling fluid, but is insoluble in the water in the pores of the argillaceous formations, or at least at the pH of the water in such pores.
