Some embodiments of the invention provide techniques whereby a user may perform a system reset (e.g., to address system performance and/or reliability degradation, such as which may be caused by unused applications that unnecessarily consume system resources, an attempted un-install of an application that left remnants of the application behind, and/or other causes). In some embodiments, performing a system reset replaces a first instance of an operating system on the system with a new instance of the operating system, and removes any applications installed on the system, without disturbing the user's data.

Migration of data relevant to, or associated with, one or more users from a prior operating system installation to a new operating system installation can be performed with reference to an archive of some or all of the data on a storage media made prior to the installation of a new operating system. Manifests associated with operating system components can be referenced to identify data to be transferred from those operating system components to new versions of those components. Independently generated manifests can also be referenced to migrate the files and data for one or more application programs, such as popular or commonly found application programs. User data and files to be migrated can be identified by loading registration database files from the offline operating system in the new operating system, or otherwise parsing a similar construct from the offline operating system.

Offline migration from prior operating system installation

Identification of software program data and configuration data. A set of installation data is identified from an installation log. A set of deduced data is determined based on the identified set of installation data, using various algorithms and heuristics. A set of program data is organized as a function of the starting and deduced data, said program data constituting all data belonging to the software. The software is applied from the source computing device to a destination computing device as a function of the organized set of program data such that the application process mimics the actions of the software's installer so that the software functions seamlessly on the destination computing device.

Identification of software execution data

A system and method for migrating state data from a source computing platform to a destination platform, such as for migrating state data from one computer to another computer. Pluggable modules collect state on a source platform and transport it to temporary storage as state objects that are independent of any particular destination platform. For example, a state object may contain the information that represents a file on a source machine, while another state object may contain a piece of registry data on that machine. At the source platform, modules provide state data gathering and analysis that collect the data into the state objects. A transport module transports the data to storage accessible to the destination. At the destination, the state objects are applied by pluggable modules to the destination platform. The object data can be adjusted, translated and/or merged with destination state data as appropriate for the destination platform.
