Fast charging of a lithium-ion battery at 4C rate or 5C rate or more is improved by applying an external magnetic field relative to the battery to establish magnetic field lines that extend in a direction of primary movement of lithium ions toward the graphite anode during fast charging. Deleterious degradation of the graphite anode from repeated fast charging can be reduced or eliminated by practice of the invention.

Magnetic field-assisted fast charging of lithium-ion batteries

An efficient and green method for selective extraction of Li from end-of-life secondary LIBs of any capacity and size is provided. Electrochemical driven selective lithium deposition is targeted at the anode/separator interface of the end-of-life LIB. The deposited Li is recovered by processing of an opened or dismantled battery using only distilled or de-ionized water. The process not only enables the recovery of the plated lithium at the anode/separator interface, but also extracts the lithium from the organic salts and/or inorganic salts in the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layers and from the electrolyte in the separator. In addition, the method partially strips the cyclable Li from the cathode and concentrates it at the anode/separator interface. The concentrated Li is extracted by using aqueous solution such as distilled or de-ionized water followed by recovery of the Li from aqueous solution. After Li recovery from the anode, the method can also enable the recovery of battery-grade graphite.

Lithium recovery via charging of lithium-ion batteries

Permanent magnet materials are provided. The permanent magnet materials are cerium based materials including zirconium and iron in combination with cobalt. The permanent magnet materials may have the formula CeZrFeCowherein 6≤x≤15. In some embodiments, the permanent magnet materials have the formula CeZrFeCoCuwherein 6≤x≤15, 0≤y≤0.4, and z=0 or 1. In other embodiments, the permanent magnet materials have the formula CeZr(FeCo), where 0<x≤1 and 0.4≤y≤1. Permanent magnets including the permanent magnet materials are also provided.

High performance magnets

A magnetic ink composition for three-dimensional (3D) printing a bonded magnet is provided. The magnetic ink composition includes magnetic particles, a polymer binder and a solvent. A 3D printing method for fabrication of a bonded magnet using the magnetic ink composition is also provided.

A method is provided for separating and/or purifying different metal oxalates by mixing the different metal oxalates in an aqueous solution comprising oxalic acid and an organic base so that at least one metal oxalate is soluble and at least another metal oxalate is not soluble. Different rare earth metal oxalates and/or transition metal oxalates can be separated.

Separating rare earth metal oxalates

A chemical dissolution method is provided for use in recycling rare earth metal-containing material such as permanent magnet material including end-of-life magnet shapes, magnet scrap and Terfenol-D alloy material by mixing the rare earth metal-containing material and an aqueous solution of a copper (II) salt to dissolve the material in the solution. The dissolved rare earth metal is then precipitated from the aqueous solution as a rare earth metal compound, such as a rare earth metal oxalate, sulfate or phosphate from which rare earth metal oxide can be obtained.

Dissolution and separation of rare earth metals

A bulk high performance permanent magnet comprising a neodymium-iron-boron core having an outer surface, and a coercivity-enhancing element residing on at least a portion of said outer surface, with an interior portion of said neodymium-iron-boron core not having said coercivity-enhancing element therein. Also described herein is a method for producing the high-coercivity bulk permanent magnet, the method comprising: (i) depositing a coercivity-enhancing element on at least a portion of an outer surface of a neodymium-iron-boron core substrate to form a coated permanent magnet; and (ii) subjecting the coated permanent magnet to a pulse thermal process that heats said outer surface to a substantially higher temperature than an interior portion of said neodymium-iron-boron core substrate, wherein said substantially higher temperature is at least 200&#xb0; C. higher than said interior portion and is of sufficient magnitude to induce diffusion of said coercivity-enhancing element below said outer surface but outside of said interior portion.
