A system and method for performing diagnostics of a link capable of measuring a signal pulse having a pulse width that is narrower than a sampling period of a clock signal used for data sampling. The system incorporates a phase interpolator that shifts a phase of the clock signal while preserving the sampling period of the clock signal. The method includes generating and transmitting a plurality of pulses to a link, where then each pulse is sampled according to the clock signal. After each pulse is sampled, the phase interpolator shifts the phase of the clock signal so that each pulse is sampled according to a unique phase, thereby increasing signal measurement accuracy without decreasing the sampling period.

Time-domain link diagnostic tool

A current sensing line fault detector includes a unity gain buffer coupling a reference voltage to an IC pin, a current controlled current source coupled to the buffer, a current mode A/D converter developing a digital signal representative of the IC pin current, and logic for determining the state of a transmission line coupled to the IC pin. An alternative current sensing line fault detector includes an OPAMP having a first input coupled to an input node and to a reference current source and having a second input coupled to a reference voltage source. A voltage controlled current source (VCCS) is coupled between the first input of the OPAMP and ground and is controlled by an output of the OPAMP. An A/D converter is coupled to the output of the OPAMP to develop a digital output signal representative of the current flowing through the current sensor.

Current sensing line fault detector

A configurable transceiver includes a first transmitter, an edge rate controller, a second transmitter, a subtractor, a bandwidth controller and a main controller. The first transmitter is configured to generate a first signal for transmission via a transmission link. The second transmitter is configured to generate a replica signal associated with the first signal. The edge rate controller is communicatively coupled to the first and/or second transmitter and is configured to control an edge rate parameter of the first and/or second signal. The subtractor is configured to subtract the replica signal from a signal received via the transmission link. The bandwidth controller is configured to control a bandwidth parameter of a difference signal received from the output of the subtractor. The main controller chooses edge rate and bandwidth control words per desired link rates. It can also automatically find the maximum possible link speed.

Configurable bidirectional transceiver for full-duplex serial link communication system

A method for assessing link quality includes detecting an eye opening of a transmission link. The detected eye opening of the transmission link is compared with a threshold eye opening or at least one previously detected eye opening. A link quality of the transmission link is assessed based upon a comparison of the eye opening with the threshold eye opening or the at least one previously detected eye opening.

System and method for wide-band adaptive equalization and eye opening monitoring with link quality detection

A data transmission technique where high speed data is transmitted differentially in a forward channel by way of a serial link, and relatively low speed data is differentially modulated onto the forward channel signal for transmission in a reverse channel via the link. By utilizing differential modulation in both forward and reverse channels, the resulting signal has a common mode voltage that is substantially constant, resulting in low EM!. The spectral content of the signal associated with the high speed data may be substantially non-overlapping with the spectral content of the signal associated with the low speed data. This facilitates the recovery of the high speed data and low speed data with minimal interference. The differential signaling lends itself for communicating data via an inexpensive medium, such as twisted wire pair or parallel PCB traces. The data transmission technique applies to various communication network topologies: point-to-point, daisy-chain, and point-to-multiple points.

Full-duplex differential serial link interface for data transferring

A system for full duplex communication using a single-ended communications link is described. The system includes a first link interface configured to generate a signal for transmission via the single-ended communications link. The signal includes data encoded in a forward channel. The system also includes a second link interface configured to receive the signal from the first link interface via the single-ended communications link and modulate the signal to encode data in a reverse channel so that the signal includes the forward channel data and the reverse channel data simultaneously.
