An exhaust aftertreatment system, including injection of chemical species, has a mixer in the exhaust pipe between the injector and the aftertreatment element. The mixer is provided by a stamped muffler flange.

An acoustic silencer is provided by a tubular member extending along an axis and having a hollow interior defining an axial flow path therethrough. The tubular member has a sidewall with an interior face facing the hollow interior and having quarter wave resonators formed by blind holes therein.

An exhaust aftertreatment filter is provided with localized and efficient heating for regeneration. Electrical and/or thermal conductors are wound with filter media sheets into a filter roll and/or conductors are provided at axial ends of the filter roll and/or microwave radiation is used for localized hot zone heating. Regeneration is provided at lateral slices of the filter roll lying in a plane extending transversely and radially relative to the filter roll axis.

Adjustable port structure varies acoustic impedance of the port by various combinations including translation to vary area along an arcuate surface, translation between discrete areas, translation to cumulatively open port area, multiple translation, multiple ports, rotational area change, and rotational length change. Adaptive control may be provided. A combined passive and active acoustic system may also be provided.

Tunable acoustic system

An active silencer for a vehicle exhaust system that is constructed so that it can be hung underneath the vehicle without altering the vehicle. The silencer has a chamber isolated from the exhaust flow. A duct spans longitudinally through the chamber. One or more loudspeakers (e.g. 2 or 4 loudspeakers) are mounted on the duct side-by-side. The loudspeakers share a common tuning volume within the duct which is ported to a mixing apparatus where the canceling acoustic wave mixes with noise from the exhaust flow before the exhaust noise exits to the atmosphere.

Active exhaust silencer

An active silencer for a vehicle exhaust system that has a low profile so that it can be hung underneath the vehicle in a conventional manner without altering the vehicle. The silencer has a chamber isolated from the exhaust flow in which one or more speakers are mounted side-by-side. The speakers face downwards and share a common tuning chamber within the isolated chamber. The tuning chamber is ported to a mixing chamber where the canceling acoustic waves mix with noise from the exhaust flow before the exhaust noise exits to the atmosphere.
