Hydrogen sulfide is scrubbed from a gas stream to prepare dissolved alkali metal sulfide or hydrosulfide, which is used to prepare feed electrolyte solution for electrochemical processing to generate alkali metal hydroxide in catholyte and polysulfide in anolyte, which may be recovered from an electrochemical reactor and which may be subjected to further processing to precipitate elemental sulfur. Aqueous scrubbing solution may include alkali metal carbonate capture agent to capture hydrogen sulfide in alkali metal bicarbonate The gas stream may include carbon dioxide in addition to hydrogen sulfide, and a ratio of dissolved alkali metal carbonate to bicarbonate may be increased prior to electrochemical processing.

Method to prepare one or more chemical products using hydrogen sulfide

A chemical process captures and convert hydrogen sulfide (HS) gas into elemental sulfur, polysulfide, sulfur dioxide and/or sulfuric acid while regenerating sodium hydroxide capture agent for further use in an initial HS capture step. Processing may include initial sodium hydroxide scrubbing of gas streams containing HS, electrochemical regeneration of the sodium hydroxide from sodium hydrosulfide or sodium sulfide, recovery of sulfur and/or sulfur dioxide from the electrochemical processing, and production of sulfuric acid from such sulfur and/or sulfur dioxide.

Treatment of hydrogen sulfide

A method including electrolysis processing using sulfate-based electrolytes includes precipitating sodium sulfate decahydrate from a salt solution and then redissolving sodium sulfate decahydrate to prepare feed of electrolyte solution for the electrolysis processing. Front-end processing may be used to treat mixed salt solutions, including brine solutions. Calcium sulfate reagent may provide a sulfate source to regenerate electrolyte solution following carbon capture, and with carbon dioxide being sequestered in the form of calcium carbonate.

Sulfate-based electrolysis processing with flexible feed control, and use to capture carbon dioxide

A carbon dioxide negative method of manufacturing renewable hydrogen and trapping carbon dioxide from the air or gas streams is described. Direct current renewable electricity is provided to a water electrolysis apparatus with sufficient voltage to generate hydrogen and hydroxide ions at the cathode, and protons and oxygen at the anode. These products are separated and sequestered and the base is used to trap carbon dioxide from the air or gas streams as bicarbonate or carbonate salts. These carbonate salts, hydrogen, and trapped carbon dioxide in turn can be combined in a variety of chemical and electrochemical processes to create valuable carbon-based materials made from atmospheric carbon dioxide. The net effect of all processes is the generation of renewable hydrogen from water and a reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or in gas destined to enter the atmosphere.

Electrochemical apparatus to generate hydrogen and sequester carbon dioxide

Halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons in water are degraded by methanotrophic bacteria in the presence of oxygen and at least one lower alkanol as a carbon source.
