Durable, anti-fouling, crosslinked zwitterionic coatings that are grafted to the surface of a substrate through covalent bonding are disclosed. When exposed to a light source, zwitterionic monomers react with a crosslinker and with activated radicals at the surface of the substrate, simultaneously forming the crosslinked zwitterionic coating and anchoring it to the surface of the substrate. Photomasking techniques can be used to micropattern the zwitterionic coatings. The zwitterionic coatings can be applied to a variety of substrates, including medical devices and systems.

Durable photopolymerizable cross-linked anti-fouling coatings

A cranial plate is provided for use after a craniectomy. The plate is mounted to the skull and protects the brain exposed in the skull opening. A plate is initially spaced above the skull with gaskets or spacers so as to preclude pressure on the brain. The gaskets or spacers are resorptive, or otherwise dissolve or shrink over time, until the plate settles upon the skull. An elastic web extending over the plate provides a constant force to pull the plate towards the skull as the spacers shrink. The plate is secured to the skull using screws. The plate may include alignment posts residing adjacent the skull opening to maintain proper positioning of the plate as the spacers shrink. The plate eliminates the need for a second cranioplasty surgical procedure.

The invention provides a process for manufacturing a polymeric material having a compositional gradient, comprising: forming a mixture comprising a first photopolymerizable polymer precursor and a second photopolymerizable precursor, and subjecting said mixture to an intensity gradient of electromagnetic radiation, wherein said first precursor has a greater reactivity ratio than said second precursor, and/or said first precursor is mono-functional and said second precursor is di-functional, and/or said first precursor is less inhibited by oxygen than said second precursor.
