An apparatus for driving a plasma display panel including scan electrodes, sustain electrodes, and panel capacitors formed between the scan electrodes and the sustain electrodes is disclosed In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a scan integrated circuit for supplying a scan voltage to the scan electrodes, a sustain discharge voltage generator for applying the first voltage and the second voltage to the scan electrodes, and a rising reset waveform generator for applying a rising reset waveform rising from a third voltage to a fourth voltage to the scan electrode. In the plasma display panel according to the present invention, a transistor for applying a rising reset waveform is coupled to a transistor to eliminate a conventional main switch.

A driving apparatus of a plasma display panel includes an energy recovery circuit. The energy recovery circuit recovers charging/discharging energies of a panel capacitor to a power source supplying unit using a transformer according to charging/discharging operations of the panel capacitor. It includes a first controlling switch, a second controlling switch, and a transformer. The second controlling switch is connected between the panel capacitor and the power source supplying unit and switched according to an external control signal to control the energy recovery from the panel capacitor to the power source supplying unit. The first controlling switch is connected between the panel capacitor and the power source supplying unit and switched according to an external control signal to control the energy recovered in the power source supplying unit to be supplied to the panel capacitor. The transformer is connected between the first controlling switch and the second controlling switch and the panel capacitor so that resonance current flows on a primary inductor by the switching operations of the first controlling switch and the second controlling switch, and induced current induced by the resonance current flowing on a secondary inductor flows to a direction compensating the resonance current through the first controlling switch and the second controlling switch.

In an address driving circuit including a power recovery circuit, an energy charged in an external capacitor is established to be greater than an energy discharged from the external capacitor. As a result, a voltage of the external capacitor is increased to an address voltage to automatically stop a power recovery operation in the case of displaying a full white pattern. Further, to perform the power recovery operation in the cases of the dot on/off pattern and the line on/off pattern, the voltage of the external capacitor reaches an equilibrium state between the half the address voltage and the address voltage.

An apparatus and method for driving a plasma display panel (PDP) where a switch device can perform zero voltage switching in driving the PDP. The apparatus for driving the PDP includes a sustain-discharge unit including first through fourth switches respectively connected to both ends of a panel capacitor between a power source and ground, for sustaining a panel capacitor terminal voltage to be at a first or a second sustain-discharge voltage; a first charge and discharge unit including a first inductor, for increasing the voltage of the panel capacitor to the first sustain-discharge voltage and switching a first switch in a state of a zero voltage by half of a resonance current generated by the first inductor; and a second charge and discharge unit including a second inductor, for decreasing the voltage of the panel capacitor to the second sustain-discharge voltage and switching a third switch in a state of the zero voltage by half of a resonance current generated by the second inductor.
