The present invention relates to a variable focus lens including a fluid chamber containing first and second fluids which are non-miscible and have different refractive indices, the fluid chamber having a plurality of protrusions formed along a circumference of one open end thereof. The variable focus lens also includes a transparent plate attached to the open end of the chamber via a sealing with a predetermined interval from the protrusions. The variable focus lens further includes a first electrode disposed inside the chamber to act on the first fluid and a second electrode disposed inside the chamber and is insulated from the first fluid. The invention allows an easy manufacturing process without bubble formation, and eliminates entry and formation of bubbles due to external changes such as in temperature and pressure, thereby allowing good performance of the lens regardless of external environmental changes.

Variable focus lens having a plurality of protrusions at one end of fluid chamber

A liquid lens for adjusting a focal length by electro-wetting. A body houses a non-conductive fluid and a conductive fluid therein. A cover is capped on the body. A first adhesive bonds the body to the cover, the first adhesive curing rapidly. Also, a second adhesive bonds an outer periphery of the body to an outer periphery of the cover. The glass cover and the body are bonded across a large area by two types of adhesives with different compositions. This allows the lens manufactured to greatly withstand temperature and heat impact and stay durable in a high-temperature humid environment, thereby significantly elevating a quality of the final product.

Liquid lens having improved sealing structure

A method of fabricating a liquid lens which can prevent unstable movement of liquids while sealing a hole containing the liquids by applying voltage to a chamber containing the liquids to induce electrowetting, and a liquid lens fabricated thereby. The method includes providing a chamber with a hole formed therein for containing liquid and injecting two non-miscible liquids with different refractive indices. The method also includes placing a conductive transparent plate to be in contact with the liquid on the top and applying voltage to the conductive transparent plate and the chamber to induce electrowetting, thereby changing the shape of meniscus between the two liquids. The method further includes covering an upper surface of the chamber with the conductive transparent plate to seal the hole.

Method of fabricating liquid lens using electrowetting and liquid lens fabricated thereby

A depth of a hole for housing a liquid is minimized to obtain a slim liquid lens. In the liquid lens, a chamber has a hole formed therein. Insulating and electrolytic non-miscible fluids are housed in the hole, with the insulating fluid located at a bottom side, to form a spherical interface. The insulating and electrolytic fluids have different refractivities. The hole has a height greater than or equal to a bigger one of a height of an initial interface before electrowetting occurs and a height of a final interface when electrowetting has occurred to a maximum amount. The liquid lens has a hole perforated to a minimal depth considering a shape of the liquid interface which is governed by a contact angle and an inclination angle of the hole, thereby achieving slimness and compactness and enhancing operability of the lens.

Slim liquid lens

The present invention relates to a variable focus lens. The variable focus lens comprises a fluid chamber having a protrusion formed along one opened end thereof. The fluid chamber is cylindrically shaped to house first and second non-miscible fluids therein, and the first and second fluids have different refractive indices. A transparent element hermetically is coupled with the opened end of the chamber with a predetermined gap from the protrusion of the chamber. A first electrode is disposed inside the chamber to act on the first fluid, and a second electrode is insulated from the first electrode. The variable focus lens can be easily fabricated to prevent bubble formation with the protrusion formed at the opened end of the chamber.
