A private communication network through which a plurality of member users communicate using the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is disclosed herein. Each member user utilizes either a modified land line telephone directly connected to PSTN, or uses a modified mobile telephone operatively coupled to the PSTN through a wireless communication system. The private communication network includes network call manager having a telephone network interface for establishing a telephone connection with each of a plurality of telephone lines of the PSTN. Each of the plurality of telephone lines is associated with one of the plurality of member users. The network call manager further includes a switch matrix, coupled to the telephone network interface, for providing an information signal received from an active member user over a selected telephone line to the remaining non-active member users. A network call manager controller identifies the active member user the basis of push-to-talk (PTT) request signals received from the member users'telephones over the plurality of telephone lines. The telephone set of each member user will typically be capable of both standard telephone operation as well as of PTT operation over the private communication network. The security of the PTT private network may be enhanced by configuring each telephone set for encryption of all such reverse link transmissions, as well as for corresponding decryption of the forward link information from the active member user.

Method and apparatus for providing a private communication system in a public switched telephone network

A system and method for adjusting quality of service in a communication system improves an allocation of resources in a communications environment with shared resources among multiple communicating stations by adjusting quality of service levels based on characteristics of the communicating stations. In a disclosed embodiment, a base station () communicates with one or more remote stations (). Quality of service levels for communications between the base station and a remote stationare adjusted based on a characteristic of the remote station. In this way, a lower quality remote station can be allocated a lower quality of service level than that allocated to a higher quality remote station, thereby preventing an inefficient allocation of shared resources and improving overall system performance.

System and method for adjusting quality of service in a communication system

Techniques to reduce transmit power required for transmission of messages from an access terminal to reduce interference to transmissions from other access terminals. In one aspect, messages to be transmitted are defined and/or coded such that they may be detected at different received signal qualities. The codewords may be defined having different distances to their nearest codewords. In another aspect, messages to be transmitted are assigned to different points in a signal constellation, with the points being located such that they may be received at different signal qualities. Codewords that may be received at a lower signal quality may be assigned to messages more likely to be transmitted at higher transmit power levels (e.g., when the access terminal is located further away) or to more frequently transmitted messages.

Method and apparatus for transmitting messages in a wireless communication system

A voice recognition system applies speaker-dependent modification functions to acoustic feature vectors prior to voice recognition pattern matching against a speaker-independent acoustic model. An adaptation engine matches a set of acoustic feature vectors X with an adaptation model to select a speaker-dependent feature vector modification function f( ), which is then applied to X to form a modified set of acoustic feature vectors f(X). Voice recognition is then performed by correlating the modified acoustic feature vectors f(X) with a speaker-independent acoustic model.

Distributed voice recognition system using acoustic feature vector modification

A system for displaying performance characteristics of a circuit in a telecommunications network. The system is adapted for use with a CDMA telecommunications network and includes a Markov call testing system for performance testing the telecommunications circuit. A computer stores the results of the performance test. Software running on the computer determines a subset of the results sufficient to reflect the performance of the telecommunications circuit. A monitor on the computer displays information corresponding to the subset. In the illustrative embodiment, the system further includes a method for determining if one or more receive antennas in the telecommunications network are balanced. The telecommunications circuit corresponds to a cell site modem chip in a base station. The subset includes a number of finger signal peaks. The number is determined by calculations performed on a scan set to determine a floor above which signal peaks are chosen for inclusion in the subset. In the specific embodiment, the subset includes the eight highest signal peaks of a scan set. The scan set corresponds to a set of signal peaks as is provided by a temporal analyzer. In the illustrative embodiment, the display shows finger signal peak data resulting from Markov call testing of a cell site modem chip having one or more fingers. A first field in the display depicts a subset of signal peaks that includes n of the highest signal peaks. A second field illustrates an operational state for each of the fingers.
