A depth camera assembly (DCA) for depth sensing of a local area. The DCA includes a transmitter, a receiver, and a controller. The transmitter illuminates a local area with outgoing light in accordance with emission instructions. The transmitter includes a fine steering element and a coarse steering element. The fine steering element deflects one or more optical beams at a first deflection angle to generate one or more first order deflected scanning beams. The coarse steering element deflects the one or more first order deflected scanning beams at a second deflection angle to generate the outgoing light projected into the local area. The receiver captures one or more images of the local area including portions of the outgoing light reflected from the local area. The controller determines depth information for one or more objects in the local area based in part on the captured one or more images.

Non-mechanical beam steering assembly

Embodiments relate to tracking and determining a location of an object in an environment surrounding a user. A system includes one or more imaging devices and an object tracking unit. The system identifies an object in a search region, determines a tracking region that is smaller than the search region corresponding to the object, and scans the tracking region to determine a location associated with the object. The system may generate a ranking of objects, determine locations associated with the objects, and generate a model of the search region based on the locations associated with the objects.

Object tracking assisted with hand or eye tracking

A method of fabricating a lens includes dispensing a first liquid optically-transmissive material into a first mold cavity and then curing the first liquid optically-transmissive material to form a first region the lens having a first refractive index and an optical interface surface. A second liquid optically-transmissive material then dispensed into a second mold cavity over the optical interface surface while the first region of the lens is disposed within the second mold cavity. The second liquid optically-transmissive material in the second mold cavity is cured to form a second region of the lens having a second refractive index. An optical interface between the first region and the second region conforms to the optical interface surface.

Monolithic compound lens

A method for correcting artifacts in artificial reality headsets is provided. The method includes coupling a first image portion into a waveguide in a display for an artificial reality device, provided by a first array of pixels, coupling a second image portion into the waveguide in the display, provided by a second array of pixels, directing the first image portion through an eyebox, directing the second image portion through the eyebox, and tiling, in a user's retina, the first image portion and the second image portion to form an image having an extended field of view that includes an overlapping area comprising light provided by the first array of pixels and the second array of pixels. A system including a memory storing instructions and a processor to execute the instructions to cause the system to perform the above method are also provided.

Correcting artifacts in tiled display assemblies for artificial reality headsets

A plano-concave optical layer is fabricated based on an optical-mechanical fit profile. A concave-side of the plano-concave optical layer and a base curvature provide an optical power that matches the optical power from prescription lenses of eyeglasses.

A multi-functional diffractive optical element (DOE) for redirecting light into a waveguide and providing higher order aberration correction is described. The multi-functional DOE may be positioned on, connected to, adjacent to, or within a waveguide, and in some examples is positioned at, or near, the exit pupil of the projector lens. In an example, a head-mounted display (HMD) is configured to output artificial reality content, comprising a waveguide configured to receive input light and configured to output the received input light to an eyebox. The HMD further comprises a projector configured to input light into the waveguide, the projector comprising a display, a projection lens, and a multi-functional diffractive optical element (DOE) configured to redirect light from the projector into the waveguide and provide higher order aberration correction of the light from the display.

A volumetric depth image is captured. The volumetric depth image includes a front surface of a prescription lens, a back surface of the prescription lens, and a cornea of an eye of a wearer of the prescription lens. Lens-to-eye data is determined from the volumetric depth image. The lens-to-eye data includes measurements of the prescription lens with respect to the eye. A three-dimensional (3D) optical-mechanical fit profile is generated or the wearer based on the lens-to-eye data.

A distortion profile is based on user lens data and a selected optical-mechanical profile of a selected head mounted device. The user lens data is associated with prescription lenses worn by the user. A prescription optical layer is fabricated based on the distortion profile for the selected head mounted device.

An optical assembly for a digital projector includes a lens and a field bias optical element. The lens is disposed to receive display light generated by a display and to direct the display light along an optical path. The lens is configured to provide a first field-of-view. The field bias optical element is disposed between the lens and an aperture stop of the optical assembly. The field bias optical element is configured to bias the display light in at least one direction to provide a second field-of-view that is greater than the first field-of-view.

A light projection system includes a light source configured to emit image light and an optical assembly configured to provide positive optical power to the image light and optically correct the image light. The optical assembly comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to correct differential distortion related to the image light across a field of view (FOV) within a threshold amount. The differential distortion is corrected based in part on asymmetry of the plurality of optical elements relative to an optical axis shared by the plurality of optical elements.

A super-resolution scanning display. The scanning display includes a light source, a conditioning assembly, and a scanning mirror assembly. The light source is configured to emit source light from a plurality of columns of emitters formed along a first dimension, including at least a first column of emitters emitting in a first band of light and a second column of emitters emitting in a second band of light which are offset along the first dimension by a fraction of an emitter width and offset along a second dimension&#x2014;that is orthogonal to the first dimension&#x2014;by greater than the emitter width. The conditioning assembly receives and conditions the source light. The scanning mirror assembly scans the conditioned light along the second dimension to generate a portion of an image at a first location with a resolution that is more than a first threshold number of emitters in a unit angle in the first dimension.

An optical assembly for an eye-tracking camera includes an aperture stop, a first optical surface, and a second optical surface. The optical assembly is configured to receive non-visible light reflected or scattered by an eye and to direct the non-visible light to an image sensor along an optical path, where the non-visible light is received from an optical combiner of an eye-tracking system. The first optical surface is disposed on the optical path and is configured to correct for field-independent optical aberrations induced by the optical combiner. The second optical surface is disposed on the optical path and is configured to correct for field-dependent optical aberrations induced by the optical combiner.

A pair of moulds for moulding an optical component is disclosed. The pair of moulds includes a first mould having a first surface, and a second mould having a second surface. The first surface includes a moulding portion for moulding a first optical surface of the optical component, and an alignment portion for alignment with the second mould. The alignment portion extends around the moulding portion. The second surface includes a moulding portion for moulding a second, opposite optical surface of the optical component, and an alignment portion for alignment with the first mould via a contact with the alignment portion of the first surface. When the moulds are brought together, they self-align. A corresponding moulding apparatus and a method may use the mould pair to manufacture various optical components.

A lens assembly includes a tube in which optical elements such as lenses or micro-lenses are individually fabricated by dispensing a volume of curable optical polymer into the tube, forming the desired shape for the optical element using one or more plungers having heads corresponding to a desired lensing curvature, applying radiant energy to the tube with the plungers in place to cure the optical polymer, and repeating as needed until the desired number of optical elements are fabricated within the lens assembly which may then be integrated as a single piece into a mobile or wearable device.

Methods and systems for image sensing are provided. In one example, an apparatus comprises a semiconductor substrate comprising a light incident surface to receive light, a first pinned photodiode, and a second pinned photodiode, the first pinned photodiode and the second pinned photodiode forming a stack structure in the semiconductor substrate along an axis perpendicular to the light incident surface, the stack structure enabling the first pinned photodiode and the second pinned photodiode to, respectively, convert a first component of the light and a second component of the light to first charge and second charge. The apparatus further comprises one or more capacitors formed in the semiconductor substrate and configured to generate a first voltage and a second voltage based on, respectively, the first charge and the second charge.
