An assembly includes a housing () and a cover () that define a cavity (). An air bag () is positioned in the cavity (), and the cover () has hooks () that engage with the housing () to secure the cover () to the housing (). The air bag () expands to absorb kinetic energy of a driver. The hooks () are energized into engagement with the housing () directly or indirectly by the air bag () as it expands.

Air bag module

A climate-controlled hand grip assembly that uses one or more air jets or air channels directed at a tangent to an outer surface of the hand grip assembly. The outer surface may be curved and the air flow path may bend with the curve to provide a film of conditioned air along the outer surface that spreads beyond the point of origin of the air flow path. An exemplary embodiment of a steering wheel device with a rim and spokes is disclosed wherein the outer surface of the rim, spokes or both can be enveloped with conditioned air using a Coanda Effect.

Climate controlled steering wheel with Coanda Effect

A steering wheel assembly () contains a dampening system for mitigating vibrations transferred from a vehicle to the steering wheel assembly (). A plurality of damper spring elements or grommets or damper spring elements () are each retained within a corresponding steering wheel support member (). An air bag module () is fixed to a steering wheel () while resting upon the damper spring elements () for eliminating and/or reducing lateral displacement/vibrations normally attendant to vehicle operation. A horn switch () containing a plurality of annular support members () may be positioned over the damper spring elements (), wherein each annular support member () is coaxially aligned and positioned over a corresponding grommet () to also manage vertical displacement; the air bag module () is then fixed over the horn switchand to the steering wheel (). Movement of the airbag module can actuate the horn switch.

Integrated steering wheel, vibration absorber, and driver airbag

An information processing and display system comprising steering wheel () having a rim () and at least one spoke (), and a plurality of sensors () placed about one or both of the rim and the spoke, each sensor selectively actuable due to the proximity of a finger, fingers, a hand or hands of a driver; and a processor, logic device or computer () in communication with each sensor and capable of detecting specific hand or finger movements corresponding to specific desirable functions.

A steering wheel () having a hub portion (), a rim () and at least one spoke () connected to the hub portion () and to the rim (), the rim () having a groove and a surface of the steering wheel (); a number of actuatable light sources located in or under the groove; light diffuser or lens () positioned in the groove above the light sources.

Active safety illuminated steering wheel

An airbag inflator () has an inflator housing () with an internal chamber (); a pyrotechnic gas generant () stored in the internal chamber inside the housing () for generating inflation gases upon ignition; a strainer () with openings through which the inflation gases pass prior to inflating the airbag; a primary nozzle wall () positioned between the strainer and the gas generator; a plenum chamber () between the primary nozzle wall () and the strainer (). The primary nozzle wall () has a plurality of nozzles () with nozzle openings () oriented radially about the wall which directs gas flow tangentially spiraling laterally onto the strainer while preventing the inflation gas from flowing radially. The tangentially flowing gases impinge an internal face of the strainer laterally causing gas generant particles to recirculate and burn internally and residual debris of a size greater than the openings of the strainer () to be swept and settle in the plenum chamber () of the housing.

Inflator with flow wash strainer

An assembly of a driver airbag module () and a steering wheel () having an airbag module including a housing () and a plurality of loop members () extending from the housing () and a steering wheel () having an armature () with a center or hub portion () onto which the airbag module () is attached. The armature () has hook members (), each hook member having a hook void (). The hook void () is defined by a space above one or two base members () and below a retaining member (). The base member () has a shallow ramped surface extending upwardly to an end wall and the retaining member () has a hook surface above the ramped surface and extending to the end wall. The loop member () is retained in the hook void () between the hook surface () and the ramped surface ().

Driver air bag with snap-in attachment mechanism

An assembly is provided for steering a vehicle including a steering wheel () with an armature (); an air bag module () is coupled to the steering wheel and is operable to expand to absorb the kinetic energy of the driver. A horn switch () is coupled to the steering wheel and the air bag module. The horn switch is operable to generate an electrical signal based on an input from the driver. The horn switch includes a pair of electrically conductive elements () operable to generate the signal.

An assembly is provided for steering a vehicle including a driver interface operable to enable a driver to steer the vehicle and at least one control member operable to couple the driver interface to the vehicle. An air bag module is coupled to the driver interface and is operable to expand to absorb the kinetic energy of the driver. A horn switch is coupled to the driver interface and the air bag module. The horn switch is operable to generate an electrical signal based on an input from the driver. An attachment mechanism is operable to couple the air bag module and horn switch to the driver interface, and includes at least one retaining member operable to engage the air bag module and armature. The retaining member is operable to release the air bag module and horn switch from the driver interface upon the application of a retractive force.

Method and apparatus for securing an air bag

An intermediate article of manufacture forming an outer wrap subassembly having a leather, simulated leather or leather equivalent pliable component and one or more decorative components adhered to or otherwise attached to said leather, simulated leather or leather equivalent pliable component and one or more securing components is disclosed. The one or more securing components adheres or attaches the one or more decorative components to form the subassembly. The subassembly creates a unique attachment capability such that the crevice formed between the leather and the decorative component is maintained at a minimal gap and the radius of curvature of the leather component when assembled to the underlying article to form the final assembly has a radius of curvature of less than 2 mm, preferably 1.5 mm or less.

Decorative outer wrap subassembly and method of fabrication
