The optical disk including at least one layer comprises an information storage area for storing information on the optical disk and a data area for storing data, wherein the information storage area stores information on the amount of reflection and thickness of each of a plurality of layers, and transmission speed information on a plurality of areas which constitute the data area.

Different types of wobbles are formed on the grooves of either the user data area or the lead-out area, thereby preventing an optical pickup that performs recording/reproduction from deviating from the user data area. An optical recording medium having a read-only storage area and a writable storage area and a recording/reproducing apparatus and method therefor. The optical recording medium is a hybrid disc having both the read-only storage area, which is suitable for mass production of information having the same contents, and the writable storage area on which data can be recorded, updated or added at a user's option. The read-only storage area has a structure that is completely compatible with a digital versatile disc read only memory (DVD-ROM) specification, and the writable storage area is compatible with the recording/reproducing characteristics of a writable DVD specification so that an existing reproducing-only apparatus can read information from the read-only storage area, and data can be recorded in the writable storage area using an apparatus obtained by minimally changing an existing recording/reproducing apparatus while maintaining the physical recording characteristics of the existing recording/reproducing apparatus.

A method of discriminating an optical disc type and an apparatus thereof. The method for an optical disc system of recording and/or reproducing an optical disc that includes an optical pickup having a laser diode, an object lens, and a light receiving device, checks a track error signal while moving the object lens to upward/downward, and discriminates an optical disc type by using the magnitude of the checked track error signal. The method and apparatus discriminate the disc type in the initial stage of focusing where the object lens moves to upward/downward.
