A downhole tool including a downhole motor. The downhole motor may include a housing, a stator positioned within the housing, and a rotor positioned within the stator. The stator may include an elastomer compound that may include at least one of NBR or HNBR, process aids, and at least one of zinc oxide or graphite.

Elastomer compounds for use within a borehole

A downhole motor or pump assembly that includes a housing that includes a metal. A stator that includes an elastomer compound with an uncured plasticizer is secured and sealed within the housing using an adhesive system that includes an adhesive and a dried film thickness of 2.5 mil to 7 mil. The assembly also includes a rotor rotatable within the stator. The motor or pump is operable by rotation of the rotor within the stator. In the case of a motor assembly, the motor assembly may be part of a drilling assembly that includes a drillstring and a drill bit to drill a borehole.

Optimized adhesive thickness for metal-to-elastomer bonding in oilfield mud motor and pump stators

A system for causing wear to a material in representative downhole conditions is provided, and can include a housing with a chamber at least partially filled with a fluid, an abrasion device at least partially immersed in the fluid, a heat transfer element thermally coupled to a housing, an engagement arm coupled to the housing and a test sample attached to the engagement arm that can apply an engagement force to the test sample causing engagement of the test sample with the abrasion device. An actuation device can displace the abrasion device relative to the test sample, and cause wear of the test sample during a wear test in response to the engagement of the test sample with the abrasion device. A controller can control a thermal output of the heat transfer element to maintain the chamber within a temperature range that is representative of the downhole conditions.

A smooth torque balanced cable that includes an electrically conductive cable core for transmitting electrical power. The smooth torque balanced cable also has a first polymer surrounding said cable core. An inner layer of a plurality of first armor wires surrounds the cable core. The first armor wires being in partial contact with the first polymer and partial contact with a second polymer disposed opposite the first polymer.

High water and brine swell elastomeric compositions and method for making and using same

In a stator injection molding centralization technique, a mold core is disposed inside a stator tube, thereby forming an annulus between the stator tube and mold core. The mold core includes a pitch length defined between a first and second lobe tip of the mold core. A centralizing member is positioned in the annulus, which has a length at least as long as the pitch length of the mold core. During the injection molding process, elastomeric material is injected into the annulus behind the centralizing member, which is located adjacent to the injection point. As the elastomer is injected, it displaces the centralizing member ahead of it along the annulus. As the centralizing member moves through the annulus, it supports the mold core, thus preventing the sag effect.

Enhanced oilfield swellable elastomers and methods for making and using same

A torque-balanced, gas-blocking wireline cable and a method of making the cable includes an electrically conductive cable core for transmitting electrical power and surrounding inner and outer layers of a plurality of armor wires. Gas blocking is achieved by placing a soft polymer layer over the core before the inner wires are cabled thereon. The inner wires imbed partially into the soft polymer layer such that no gaps are left between the inner wires and the core. A second soft polymer layer is optionally extruded over the inner wires before the outer wires are applied. The second soft polymer layer fills any spaces between the inner and outer wire layers and prevents pressurized gas from infiltrating between the wires. The inner wires have larger diameters than the outer wires such that the inner wires carry approximately 60% of the load and torque imbalance is prevented.

A method of deploying a cable into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation that includes providing a cable. The cable includes an insulated conductor; an armor wire layer surrounding the insulated conductor; and a polymeric material disposed in interstitial spaces formed between armor wires forming the armor wire layer, and in interstitial spaces formed between the at least one armor wire layer and the at least one insulated conductor. The method also includes introducing the cable into a wellbore and performing at least one operation in the wellbore utilizing the cable.

Methods of using enhanced wellbore electrical cables

A hydrocarbon application cable of reduced nylon with increased flexibility and useful life. The cable may be of a hose or solid configuration and particularly beneficial for use in marine operations. A power and data communicative core of the cable may be surrounded by a lightweight intermediate polymer layer of a given hardness which is ultimately then surrounded by an outer polymer jacket having a hardness that is greater than the given hardness. Thus, a lighter weight polymer is provided interior of the outer polymer jacket, which may be of nylon or other suitably hard material. As such, the overall weight and cost of the cable may be substantially reduced.

An embodiment of a method of deploying a cable into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation comprises providing a cable, wherein the cable comprises at least one insulated conductor, at least one armor wire layer surrounding the insulated conductor, a polymeric material disposed in interstitial spaces formed between armor wires forming the at least one armor wire layer, and interstitial spaces formed between the at least one armor wire layer and insulated conductor, the polymeric material forming a continuously bonded layer which separates and encapsulates the armor wires forming the at least one armor wire layer, and whereby the polymeric material is extended to form a smooth polymeric jacket around the at least one armor wire layer, introducing the cable into a wellbore and performing at least one operation in the wellbore utilizing the cable.

A method of forming a motor winding wire for use in an oilfield application can include providing a conductive core; layering an insulating polymer layer about the core for electrical isolation thereof; adding an outer polymer layer about the insulating polymer layer to provide contaminant resistance; providing a sealable casing that comprises an oil-fillable space; disposing the motor winding wire within the oil-fillable space of the casing; filling the oil-fillable space with oil; and sealing the sealable casing to seal the oil in the oil-fillable space.
