A mechanism which provides bi-directional movement of the carrier of an electric typewriter incorporating proportional spacing. A ratchet arrangement is operable in both directions to provide the desired proportional spacing increments, with rotation of a ratchet wheel in the clockwise direction being controlled by engagement of an associated pawl with one of a plurality of stop engaging surfaces of a control member which sets the number of proportional spacing increments desired. For rotation of the ratchet wheel in the counterclockwise direction, a solenoid is coupled to the control member to momentarily rotate it clockwise until a stop engaging surface thereof abuts a selected stop surface corresponding to the number of proportional spacing increments desired, and causing the pawl associated with the ratchet wheel to move clockwise by a corresponding number of ratchet teeth--after which the solenoid is released, permitting a cocked spring to return the control member to its initial position and cause the pawl to rotate the ratchet wheel counterclockwise by a corresponding number of proportional spacing increments.

The machine will produce unjustified typed lines and will automatically encode for controlling another machine to print justified lines, as a result of a single series of manual keyboard composing operations and automatic code controlled reproducing operations for producing a justified copy of a literal text, respectively. A differential character and space key lock means prevents operation of character and space keys that would extend a line beyond the right hand margin, and this means is appropriately effective to permit the addition of any character or space that will still fit in the line at any given time. The arrangement also accounts for the difference in character sizes for each key in upper and lower case conditions.

The machine includes a delete key and automatic deleting and back spacing means that reverses the machine and deletes codes from a code medium according to previously encoded information for back space correction purposes. The machine operates much like a normal office typewriter and may be operated by a person with a little more than normal typewriting skills for encoding a justified corrected text and function control codes. The operator need not be concerned with the set width of characters or spaces in order to back space and delete, since the deleting and back spacing is performed accurately and automatically upon depression of the single delete key. Coordinated back spacing of the literal text operations, reversing of functions and automatic deleting of the individual respective codes is performed automatically in accordance with the codes previously encoded and then being deleted on the code medium. Thus, there can be no error between the forward and delete operations.

The machine is responsive to separate coded function information on the coded medium for conditioning the machine to perform separate functions such as justification, print or noprint, bold or regular typing, and for printing upper or lower case characters, and the machine is responsive to other separate coded information for conditioning the machine to perform combinations of such functions. The conditioning may be overridden. The carriage of the machine is stepped incrementally in order to enable display of characters with different predetermined widths. When the coded information corresponds to determined text type, such as an underline, however, the carriage is not stepped for the imprinting of such text type, although it is stepped for other text type that may accompany the underline or other determined text type. In the automatic reproduction of text, in order to allow time for completion of operating steps, the presentation of new coded information to the machine is responsive to completion of the function of the next preceding coded information.

Justifying, text writing composing machine

The illustrated embodiment is a desk top justifying text writing reproducing machine, illustratively controllable by a code reading means in a desk top text writing composing machine (the topic of our copending application for 'JUSTIFYING, TEXT WRITING COMPOSING MACHINE', Ser. No. 213,045, filed Dec. 28, 1971), for automatically producing a justified copy, line-by-line, generally one line behind the line being encoded in the composing machine. The operator normally merely puts paper in the reproducing machine, sets a left margin control and shifts a key that conditions the machine for code controlled operations. The arrangement of the encoded information for each line is such that the reproducer is normally automatically operated according to a justifying quotient code, a justifying remainder code, a machine conditioning or clearing code, the text codes (including characters, spaces and functions) and a carriage return code, in that order, so the controlling information for succeeding lines is fed in a single forward direction and the operator need not handle the code media or perform any of the reproducing operations. The reproducing machine includes means, responsive to conditioning codes, for in each instance operating the machine to assume a particular group of operating conditions that correspond to the operating conditions of the composing machine at the time the conditioning code was encoded. The reproducing machine also includes clearing means, responsive to a clear code, for placing the machine in a normal operating group of conditions. In a reader control 'stop' condition, the reproducer may be operated manually, for inserting variables in an otherwise code controlled reproduction, or for using the machine as a typewriter.
