The disclosed technology generally relates to charging a secondary battery of an electric vehicle and more particularly to thermal management of the secondary battery associated with charging. In one aspect, a method of charging a battery of an electric vehicle includes determining that a battery temperature of a secondary battery is below a predetermined lower temperature limit suitable for charging the secondary battery at a high charging power greater than 18 kW. The method additionally includes externally applying, by contactless energy transfer means, electromagnetic energy to an energy conversion module of the electric vehicle. The method additionally includes converting the electromagnetic energy to heat and heating the secondary battery to a temperature above the lower temperature limit. The method further includes charging the secondary battery at the high charging power while maintaining the battery temperature between the lower temperature limit and an upper temperature limit at least in part by controlling a magnitude of the electromagnetic energy transferred by the contactless energy transfer means. Aspects further relate to an electric vehicle charging station, a powering system for an electric vehicle and an electric vehicle charging system.

A battery according to some implementations includes a first liquid electrode to undergo a first half reaction, a second liquid electrode to undergo a second half reaction, a hollow frame forming a first electrode reservoir to store the first liquid electrode and a second electrode reservoir to store the second liquid electrode, and a separating membrane coupled to the frame and disposed between the first electrode reservoir and the second electrode reservoir, wherein the frame includes an inter-electrode communication part configured to allow the first electrode reservoir and the second electrode reservoir to be in fluidic communication with each other.

Battery

The disclosed technology generally relates to energy storage devices, and more particularly to redox batteries. In one aspect, a redox battery comprises a first half cell and a second half cell. The first half cell comprises a positive electrolyte reservoir comprising a first electrolyte contacting a positive electrode and has dissolved therein a first redox couple configured to undergo a first redox half reaction. The second half cell comprises a negative electrolyte reservoir comprising a second electrolyte contacting a negative electrode and has dissolved therein a second redox couple configured to undergo a second redox half reaction. The redox battery additionally comprises an ion exchange membrane separating the positive electrolyte reservoir and the negative electrolyte reservoir. The first half cell, the second half cell and the ion exchange membrane define a redox battery cell that is sealed in a casing.

The present invention relates to a redox flow battery having at least one battery module which consists of a battery cell, an electrolyte tank, an electrolyte flow path, a fluid control unit, and a pressure generating unit, wherein each of the battery modules is charged and discharged by independently circulating an electrolyte.

The present invention relates to a redox flow battery comprising: a battery module including a battery cell, an electrolyte tank, an electrolyte flow path, and an electrolyte transfer part; and an electrolyte control unit for controlling electrolyte flow of the battery module, wherein the redox flow battery comprises one or more battery modules, and is charged or discharged by an electrolyte independently circulated through every battery module or every predetermined number of battery modules by the electrolyte control unit.

Redox flow battery

A redox flow battery according to the present invention is provided with a battery module including a battery cell or a stack, and a pair of electrolyte tanks, and a replacement of a pump is applied for each battery module to transfer electrolyte to the battery cell and the stack such that shunt current is reduced. In addition, each battery module is provided with the pair of the electrolyte tanks such that a transfer distance of the electrolyte can be reduced, and a fluid controller using pressure instead of a pump for each module such that power required for driving the pump can be reduced and efficiency of the battery can be improved.
